Echo News Shrimpers reject approach for midfielder Oli Coker

From what I can gather, the league one club in question is Peterborough, which was my first guess when I heard of this story yesterday.

However, I don’t believe it to have been a “bid” of X amount. More a case of a phone call to find out what the plan was with Coker, if we would entertain selling/loaning him to them, we said no and they asked to be kept in the loop as and when that changes.

I think Peterborough would be an excellent move for Oli, but I’m hoping he is one we keep hold of for a bit. He had scouts last season watching him. I think, a bit like Kev, he is one of those players that you appreciate more when he isn’t in the team, and goes a bit under the radar when he is.

This could be a big season for Oli, a real breakthrough season for him. I was a bit “meh” with him before he got injured in Dagenham’s cup final at Roots Hall. I then appreciated what he actually brought to the team more. I know @Yorkshire Blue put it much better with how valuable he is to the side, but he also hasn’t actually “nailed” now a starting spot in Kev’s XI.

My guess, January is when he gets his big move after a decent half a season. I wouldn’t be getting his name on the new shirt, as I don’t think he sees the season out with us.

All I can see is ‘a league one club’.. but I can’t get into the page fully
This is all it says for now.

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United have rejected an approach from a League One side for midfielder Oli Coker, Echosport understands.

Coker has made 79 appearances for the Shrimpers first team since coming through the youth ranks at Roots Hall.

MORE TO FOLLOW.

He's out of contract next summer - worth extending that contract now to maximise any bids??

It’s a balancing act isn’t it.

Let’s say we give him a new 2 year deal, or whatever, then he does his ACL out in Spain.

I’m sure, during the season, as a lot of deals expire in 2026, we’ll be extending some of them earlier.

But it’s worth baring in mind, if Coker saw out his deal, we will still be entitled to compensation anyways, so we wouldn’t lose him for “free” when we might for a GSM for example due to age and the fact he came through the academy too.

It's also a very weird one, because even though I rate him highly, where does he fit into Kev's side with the current players we have?

He isn't a number 6, that will be fought out between Morton, Miley and maybe Husin. The right side of the midfield 3 has been earned by KAF, but he has Austin and Husin ready to pounce. The left side is probably his best bet, but many are calling for Parillon, and that may also be Austin's position, with Husin also vying for that spot. So it's not plain sailing for Coker in our own side.

It's odd to think that a player linked with a league 1 club isn't a nailed on starter for us. I do however think that certain players excel at different levels. I think Coker needs to play at a higher level to get the best out of him.

With him not being a guaranteed starter, would he be 'sorely' missed, or could selling him open the door for a better striker to come in? Btw, I'm not saying we are going to get a load of money for him and all of that money can be spent on a striker, but we are after a striker anyway and maybe some of the Coker fee could go towards that.

Depending on the bid then we should let him move on.

If its posh then a decent fee plus percentage could be good for the club..

He is a good player but will likely be on the bench behind Miley, KAF, Austin, Husin etc.

I rate him though.

Depends on Kevs plans and where he sees him being used best. If there are others in front of Coker and we can get a decent fee for him plus sell on fee as Peterborough do seem to get the best out of players and then move them on for a decent fee. I'd not begrudge Coker the move.

Believe he has been here since 2011 in the youth set up in some form or another.

Not as much as a fan of Coker than some people, think he is only rated coz he has come through our youth team . Personally see him down in the pecking order next season and would try get a good fee for him

We've just had a an enquiry from a League 1 club, and he had numerous scouts watch him last season, but you don't rate him? Is it even remotely possible you might be wrong on this one?

It’s my opinion mate not saying I’m right or wrong , it’s just an opinion?
