"Shrimpers" or " The Blues"......

I'm sure this has been discussed to death over the years on here but it does nark me a bit. A shiny new sign has just been erected at the entrance to the training ground to inform of the next match date and opposition telling those who dont know when "The Blues " next home game is. Also the road signage around the town states S.U.F.C. The Blues ..... you get my drift ... my question is did I miss the democratic vote on if our nickname should be officially changed or did some marketing bod up in the offices at Roots Hall decide it for me ? ?

i make you kukin right mate, players, staff, chairman and dictators will all come and go, but you can never change the history of our club, our nickname is and has always been the shrimpers and out of respect to so many who have given us so much over the last decade, I think it should stay the same, I find it quit disrespectful that RM,King or however think they can change our heritage. Thats the one thing that keeps southend united seperate to any other club, and 'The Shrimpers' says so much about the tradition of our town and the people that have lived in the borough through out he years. I feel really strongly about this

It is simoly not historically accurate to say we have always been the Shrimpers. In fact the evidence is the other way. If you read any old Southend Standards the club was always the Blues or United. My father who went for years never called the team any thing other than the Blues. An original player called Gonger Frost Played in the 1906 team, stood as a councillor in the 1930s and made great play about being an ex SUFC player. He referred to the club several times in his election leaflet. What did he call us.................sorry lads it was the Blues.
Bottom line is we can call the club what we like. Shrimpers is more distinctive but Blues is more historic.

oh right thanks for that , mate , I stand educated ! But not withstanding the fact that we were apparantly the Blues before the Shrimpers does not make me feel any better about no one seemingly being consulted for the most recent change back to the Blues.

Even I can change....as my name shows :)

it used to be C'mon you Blues

This may be true, but 'The Blues' says nothing to me, it's boring and unoriginal. Give me Shrimpers any day. I too believe the signs should be changed.

actually thinking about it my dad called the team "Blues" without the "the" or "that load of old tripe" as in "I'm never going to watch that load of old tripe" again.
Until the next match of course.

combine both names! we could become the blue shrimpers! or maybe the royal blue shrimpers as we do have HRH Harry playing in our side.

I think it's a well known fact that Ron Martin dislikes 'The Shrimpers' with a passion.

Exactly. And whilst he's at the helm, we'll continue to be referred to as 'The Blues' in all official capacities.

It's a bit annoying, but I think Ron's credit sheet is big enough to allow this to pass.

We're still 'The Shrimpers' as far as I'm concerned, although I still like to call Chelsea 'The Pensioners' as well, much to the confusion of people who've only been supporting them for four years.

that is why you will always be a legend and god like hero to me.I love you.and never was a truer paragraph written

Who would a neutral think about when The Blues is mentioned? Chelsea, Birmingham, Man city there are so many, the shrimpers however is original and unique.
