SOUTHEND United fans are heading back to the North Bank.

The stand behind the goal has hosted mainly just visiting supporters since the mid 1990s.

But Blues fans are now set to return to what is regarded as their spiritual home at Roots Hall on a gradual basis during the remainder of 2024, starting with Saturday’s clash against table-topping Forest Green Rovers.

A Shrimpers spokesman confirmed: “As part of our phased approach to opening the Solopress North Bank for home supporters, we are pleased to announce that Block X of the Gilbert & Rose Stand will now open, starting with this Saturday’s game against Forest Green Rovers.

We’ve listened to your feedback, and we’ve acted.

“The aim is for our fans to return to the North Bank by the end of the year.”

Supporters who have already purchased tickets for elsewhere in the stadium are able to switch in the repaired area of the stadium by contacting the ticket office.

But more work must be carried out before further blocks can be opened to fans.

The spokesman added: “We will need to carry out some essential works to create a new access route for away fans via the North-East corner.

“These works are being undertaken in partnership with the police and the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), both of whom have been incredibly supportive of our plans.

“As mentioned, our aim is to open the North Bank yellow seats for home fans on Boxing Day.

“By this time, we will have completed the necessary improvements to ensure the safe access and egress of away supporters.”

And the move has been welcomed by Shrimpers supporters.

Lifelong Blues fan John Liddle said: “It’s always grated on me that away fans have been in the North Bank. especially as I think it’s the best acoustics in the ground.

“I think it makes sense to get Southend fans back in there if possible and it’s a good move from the consortium.”
