Injured - Southend United striker Josh Walker (Image: Ross Johnston)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is hopeful Josh Walker’s injury is not as bad as first feared.

Walker hobbled off during the second half of the Shrimpers’ 1-0 win at Braintree Town on New Year’s Day following a poor challenge from Ryan Clampin.

But Maher is keeping his fingers crossed Walker has not suffered a serious setback – despite having to miss Saturday’s 1-0 win against Southport.

“He’s sore, really sore and it’s the impact of the tackle where he’s still sore,” said Maher.

“We’re hoping, touch wood, it’s not too bad, but we’ll have to see how it settles down.

“It’s just below his knee on the outside of his leg but hopefully it’s nothing structural and that would be a big relief if so.

Poor Josh doesnt have much luck

This one was even higher !

After coming on as a sub for Gills he got savaged after 2 minutes on the field . I think around 8 minutes o be able to attempt to get up !

"GILLINGHAM star Josh Walker has been stretchered off after taking a sickening blow to the head..

He was on the end of a horror tackle just a minute after coming on as a 21st minute substitute against Barrow."

The tackle at Braintree was horrible, ruthless and a bit vindictive. If that happened on the street it would have been GBH. Even if you overlook the fact that he was away, having roared past their defender, the challenge was so cynical it should have been a straight red. The ref and the lino should be hanging their heads in shame for not dealing with this properly.

I really hope Josh is okay, and no big damage done once the soreness has subsided.
