New role - for Southend United legend Jason Demetriou (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has praised the part Jason Demetriou is playing with the Shrimpers.

Demetriou was named the club’s chief scout in October shortly after confirming he would be retiring from playing.

And Maher is happy with how the 37-year-old has settled into the role.

"How he works makes him brilliant to have and he's doing really well,” said Maher.

"He comes in and he did some coaching today which was good.

"He's out watching games all the time with him and John (Still) adding to the other side of it in terms of the recruitment and the data and what that looks like as well.

"There's a multitude of things which add to his role and to have someone who knows the club around the place is massive as well.

Demetriou made 260 appearances for the Shrimpers having signed in 2016.

People paying for the Echo subscription really are getting short changed. This article is a copy and paste of quotes from the press conference on Thursday.

I'd pay if each week there was an exclusive long form interview. But lots of little reports with soundbites that are less than 1 minute doesn't enthrall.

Who else reports these press conferences?

They’ll sometimes appear up on the official site a few days after but where else can I find them?

We may not have the biggest budget for players but we must be right up there for coaches and scouts.

First two I looked at all had 11 in their footballing departments listed on their websites. We have 10 (including the kitman)

I've always thought Chris would benefit from his own independent subscription service, but I reckon that would require leaving the Echo, and it's hard to predict how many subscribers he'd get.
