Explanation - from Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris PhillipsChief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has explained the decisions made during Blues’ 3-0 defeat to Barnet on Saturday.

Maher opted to start with on loan MK Dons goalkeeper Nathan Harness between the sticks.

And he was given the nod due to Collin Andeng Ndi being forced to miss training with an illness.

"Nathan has trained all week properly and he was ready to play so we went with that," explained Maher.

Harness also started Wednesday night's clash at Boston United but the match was abandoned after just seven minutes due to fog.

Maher chose to start Josh Walker and Charley Kendall in attack against Boston.

But his decision to substitute Kendall during the second half on Saturday was met by jeers from supporters in the stands.

Explaining the change, Maher said: "We're putting balls in the box and Macca (Bonne) put himself about.

"We had to try something different."

Maher opted to start with a 5-3-2 formation against Barnet.

And when asked about people mentioning the system, he replied: "I'm not going to because it will probably make something more of it than it is.

"You've got to mark from set pieces.

"If we take ours we go 1-0 up and then they take theirs in about the space of a minute.

"That's why they are where they are in the league and where we are too."

Waldron and Appiah-Forson I think it was were ready at 75 minutes, waiting to come on, then they’re told to wait until the 80th minute for no apparent reason. We’re well behind, playing awfully, 3-0 down, make the changes ASAP and have a go. I appreciate they didn’t really make a difference but why wait? Makes no sense.

I don’t know the bloke personally, but my son has met him socially and says he is an ok guy, but to me he comes across as either oblivious, stubborn, naive or even a combination of all three. Perhaps he is even over loyal to players who has served him well in the past and blind to them not being the answer anymore.

What I do know is that the input from the coaches is reflected by the performance by players on the pitch - which is boring, negative and defeatist.

Stand by for a crash in supporter numbers next season if this uninspiring rubbish continues.

Absolute rubbish against Barnet . We have nobody who can create and score . I’ve supported Blues since first game at Roots Hall but now I feel like giving up my season ticket .

He talks like he sets up. useless and will get worse!

“We’re putting balls into the box”

WHAT! When?..

The one that their keeper spilled. Which of course should have been a goal. 2-1 and it would be totally different atmosphere at the Hall.

Plus Kev is right. Ralph should have done much better with free header against on of the League leaders. Golding was embarrassing for both goals from corners. He joins the 'SUFC CB's who can't defend the far post club'....With ease.

We don’t look like scoring, cannot defend, combo both together, it’s an easy 3 points for Barnet, they won’t find an easier game than us.

I bet Braintree and Tamworth will beat Barnet over next few months.
