Shrimpers At Your Doorstep is back for 2024, and every day this week, we'll be surprising a deserving member of the local community who has gone above and beyond.
Our first winner is Karl Lansley. Karl, founder of the Carli Lansley Foundation, has used family tragedy to raise awareness of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.
He has inspired countless people in the Southend community to take on fitness challenges, from running and football to mountain climbing, fostering a sense of togetherness and positive change.
Read more about Karl's story below...
"Karl’s wife Carli died in 2017 as a result of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. Imagine the love of your life dying in bed next to you and one of your young children trying to wake Mummy – most of us would hide away in despair. Rather than shrink away Karl galvanised himself by creating the amazing campaign (Carli Lansley Foundation) that he has run since then to raise awareness of the condition and funds to pay for hundreds of free heart checks for young people, buying defibrillators and providing free training in their use.
"To help raise awareness and give back to the community Karl is the lynchpin organiser of Team Carli, getting so many people to make themselves fitter by walking, running, playing football and even climbing mountains in the name of the charity the Carli Lansley Foundation. Examples of this are: 50 people running the Southend 10k in October 2024 and 80 people running the Southend Half Marathon in June 2024, many who only started running because of Karl’s encouragement; joining Karl in summer 2024 on legs of his mammoth 1,000 pilgrimage walk around south-east England including up and down the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head hills; the Team Carli football team dragging the less fit out of grassroots football retirement to regularly play against local teams; and the latest madcap activity of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge where in September 2024, 50 people of all ages and levels of physical activity tackled three up and even scarier down mountains in Yorkshire over 12 hours."
"Karl has seen how all these activities have brought together the local community and is very encouraging for everyone to get involved and can support each other to meet the fitness challenges he regularly proposes. Karl is so modest that I am not sure he realises the tremendously positive impact he has on the local Southend community."
Centre-back Adam Crowther was delighted to give back to a loyal supporter with an inspiring story. Watch the video below.
