Tomorrow sees referee Graham Salisbury from Preston making his first visit to Roots Hall, despite this being his 10th season on the list.

The experienced 48 year old enjoyed a reputation as a steady journeyman official who was never going to make it to the top, but a safe pair of hands at Football League level. He has refereed Southend just twice before. That important end of season game at Grimsby (1-1) in 2004/5 and the match at Luton (lost 1-0) in 2007/8 when one of Luton's players cautioned was Anthony Grant.

Strangely his card count has gone sky high this season though, but he has been getting a lot of competitive Championship matches (he did the recent Hull-Leeds match). He is averaging virtually 4 yellows per match this season.

Carl Brook from St Leonards-on-Sea also makes his Roots Hall debut as Assistant with Michael George from North Walsham in Norfolk on the other line. Phil Knight from Canterbury is 4th official.

He certainly didn't play much added time !!

I remember us being all over GRIMsby in the last 20 minutes, I think we even hit the post. The GRIMsby fans then decided to invade the pitch early, which meant Graham blowing early!
Panicked a bit I would imagine, looking at those northern nutters about 5 meters away!

Mick, what's the retirement age for referee's these days? Didn't it used to be 47?

The PGMO did have a retirement age of 48, but that has been successfully challenged in the courts - but that may be appealed - and in any case retiring referees could apply for an extension (Peter Walton and Paul Taylor both did). FIFA used to be 45 and may well still be.

Thanks for that. I think you're right about FIFA as I think Collina had to retire at a ridiculously early age.
