We've generally had the better of matches against Shrewsbury over the years - a good time to consolidate that situation!
The referee will be Carl Boyeson from Hull, an experienced official in his 13th season who will be officiating his 10th Southend match. The 45 year old, central heating technician will be paying his third visit to Shrewsbury's new ground - the previous two were home wins.
So far in his matches we have won 3, lost 5 and drawn the other. His last Southend match was a poor performance, not by him especially, but by us. It was the 2-1 defeat at Northampton last season with yellows for Timlin and Phillips and one of theirs. Before that, his last two Southend matches both finished up 3-0. More recently the 3-0 victory in 2009/10 against a woeful Walsall side. No complaints with an early dismissal and two yellows, all to the visitors. Before that was the 3-0 defeat in the early kick-off match at Leicester in 2008/9 (the match in which Liam Feeney, now Bolton, played all 10 minutes of his Southend career), where he didn't caution anyone and before that a late 4-3 defeat at Hartlepool the previous season (two yellows each). Earlier matches included another win over Walsall, another defeat at Leicester but nothing especially noteworthy.
I've always thought him to be a reasonably steady journeyman of a referee, but he is still getting some decent appointments. Not the nimblest of officials, he doesn't get around the pitch as well as some.
This season's card count is a slightly below average 56 yellows from 22 games and 3 reds. Unusually he's had more away wins than homes - long may that continue, at least 'til after Saturday.
Assistants are NIck Greenhalgh from Bury and scouser Rob Jones with Paul Hobday from Tipton as Fourth Official.
