My old man RIP played SUFC st RH in something akin to the Essex cup back in the late 50's early 60s im guessing, scoring a pen after being hauled down by Frankie Banks. SUFC got in touch after the game and invited John to come sign, but his manager at the time refused to tell him. He never forgot after being told 6 months later.
Another one, lad i spent Sunday mornings having a battle with in our youth games ended up joining SUFC on the YTS scheme. Made it into reserves and back then the ressies were superb, i believe Paul Newell was between the sticks as he was the same age as me. Anyway, this lad having spent weeks running around the 1st teamers got told to come to Roots Hall on the day of the match. No mention to bring his kit. So he had a couple of beers Friday night, oblivious.
Bobby Moore hauled him into his office on match day and told him today was supposed to be his 1st team debut, but he was out on his ear for going out the night before !
