Seven Released

SEVEN RELEASED
Posted on: Mon 11 May 2009
Southend United have today released seven players following the conclusion of the season 9 days ago.

Only Charles Ademeno and Peggy Lokando out of the seven youngsters set to leave have made first team appearances.

Also leaving Roots Hall are Jamie Forshaw, Luke Thurlbourne, Rhys Henry and Dan Harvey all of whom had been at the club on one-year development contracts after coming through the Centre of Excellence set-up.

Ademeno has made five appearances for Steve Tilson's first team since progressing from Blues youth set-up three years ago, also spending four months on loan at Salisbury City this season.

Ex-Arsenal trainee Lokando meanwhile made just one substitute appearance in the Carling Cup in 2007.

Meanwhile, youth team captain Davis Abbey has also been told his future is away from Southend United with the 18-year-old the last of Blues title winning youth team to learn his fate.

Southend United Football Club would like to thank all those leaving for their service and wish them all the best for the future.

Can I be the first to say that I am shocked and appalled at this decision as, clearly, one of these players is going to come back and bite us on the bum. I'd like it to be known that one of them is an obvious one for the future, someone who we should persevere with on the off chance that they could go on to play at a higher level. They might not have shown any promise whatsoever at this moment in time, but I'm absolutely convinced that one of them, possibly, maybe, might perhaps conceivably pull their finger out.

When they do come back to haunt us, I will pull this thread out and demonstrate how I told you so.

No I won't tell you which player!

Disappointed in Ademeno. I thought he had more about him than Walker or Scannel but hey ho Tilly sees them every day so he must know best.

i would say forshaw, ademeno and henry all have a chance of playing league football wouldnt go any further than that i dont think any of them will come back to bite us

I was surprised that one of them was the youth team captain..... Not the thank you that you'd expect after captaining a title winning team. Ron Martin was onlypraising our youth set up a week or so ago....

I know, Davis Abbey must have been pretty surprised himself. Not that surprised in Rhys Henry, he's been completely overshadowed by Craig Calver in the games I've seen even if he HAS scored.

Forshaw's gone? Didn't see that coming!

Everytime I've seen him play, he's been quality. Love seeing him hug the touchline!

Oh well, Tilly knows best I guess - but I won't begrudge any of them going onto bigger and better things in the future.

Rhys Henry isn't necessarily a better player than Craig Calver but I think he is more of an out and out goalscorer, he is like all good goalscorers in that he can be having a bad game but then pop up and score the winner in injury time. Jamie Forshaw is also a good player and will definitely play league football and I wouldn't be surprised if he joined a struggling League 2 team, he's quick, a good crosser, he has a lot of very good qualities but he struggled with fitness quite a bit. Charles Ademeno has looked like a threat every time I have seen him play and I think he might drop out of the league but he will be back soon. Davis Abbey impressed me too, his presence is quite well felt, he's got quite a big build and wins every tackle, also a great passer of the ball and can get it down and play it. I'm disappointed that they have been released but the others haven't been anything special from what I've seen.

Sad for Charles. Tilly never seemed to want to give him a chance in the 1st team but on the rare occasion he did play, he always looked the part. Think he will do well elsewhere given an opportunity to play regularly.

Lokando - not surprised at all but shocked at Davis Abbey going. Good luck to all for the future.

good to see we're taking decisive action on this front.. Bottom line is if the Management team think they aren't good enough get rid!!! Looking forward to a good bunch of new youth's coming in to really rise to the challenge...

You've got to look at the number we've kept on this year compared to previous years, I'm certain it's more, what with O'Keefe and Herd banging on the first team door, Calver getting on in the testimonial, etc..

Has Paul Furlong not been released?

Not surprised about any of the youth team players, except that Ron Martin keeps banging on about not letting another Kightley go and how we need to not release players after just one year as a pro, because some take longer to develop. So bearing all that in mind, why have we let Ademano go?

Will be interesting to see what level all these released youth team players catch on at.

After seeing Kightley and Hooper 'slip through the net' and go on to become major successes at other clubs I think it would be a bitter pill to swallow if any of these seven did the same.

With this in mind instead of simply releasing youth team players who didn't make the grade how about relieving them of their passports and dumping them in some remote country where they don't play football or speak English?

I thought Ademeno looked good when he played. He wasnt afraid to run at defenders particuarly when he was out on the left wing. It will be interesting to see if we find someone vastly better to play on this flank, i think Ademeno would have been fairly reasonable there when called upon and couldnt have been on much money.

Calver wants to play first-team football next season. I'd like to see how he does. Herd could play a big part with Clarke's future unsure and Dervite unlikely to resign. O'Keefe looks like he can be a good player aswell and I could see him as a useful back-up next season.
