Set Pieces

Is it just me and my Dad who thinks that we never look like scoring from set pieces, yet the oppo always do?

Or is it just a trick of the pessimistic mind?

I've never seen this discussed on the Zone, and keen to know some thoughts?

I've said this for ages, we've looked a lot more threatening with Herd in the side, Barrett's goal at the weekend came from a corner that we won from a Herd throw in.

This was my post from last week in the throw ins thread.

There's never really been a Southend player who has been able to put in a decent delivery from a corner on a regular basis, Nicky Nicolau wasn't too bad at it.

There isn't a lot of room for a run up when taking a corner at Roots Hall but the opposition never seem to have a problem with it, with the amount of goals we concede from them.

We should be making this an advantage some of our players should be out there practising taking corners, the corners at Roots Hall should be worn out.

You must have missed Barrett scoring from a corner on saturday then and the first goal last night came form a Herd throw in.

Me and my mate have always said the same, "another pointless Southend Corner".

However, throw-ins and freekicks aren't AS bad.

I will concede that Herd's throws are brilliant. I was more talking about free kicks and specifically corners.

Sure, Barrett scored on Saturday, but we must have a very low conversion rate generally?

Very low, Barrett had to be the first for a while, the problem with the corners is we've not had someone who can take one on the Roots Hall pitch, watching Malone take a corner/free kick was cringeworthy.

Im with you mate. Our corners are 99% of the time so easy to defend its untrue. Free Kicks I think we have got a lot better with Franno taking them now. I think its worth bringing the king of corners back (Lewis Hunt) purely to aim for more goals from them.

The last 2 games our corners from both side, have been a lot better, can't think of many that haven't cleared the front man, which is our usual problem. Barrett scored from one on Saturday, and Sankofa probably should have scored from one last night if we're being picky.

If you look at the pitch, Francis and Herd have to run up a slight slope before even kicking the ball. Maybe they should look at what Blackburn do.

Just need a bit of variety. Maybe throw in some short ones or someone like Baldwin coming short and trying to flick it on into the mixer. Or some deep ones to the back post. Too often they are floated in too close to the keeper or barely beat the first man.

Gower, Maher, Eastwood, Mulgrew, Hammell, Harding all good at taking set pieces, all have one connection, they're no longer at the club. In part there's your answer we don't have anyone of that calibre, Simon Francis is about the best we have currently, he's improving but still inconsistent.

Yep, it's shocking.

Did anyone spot the obvious foul throws by their RB, everytime he did the same thing and everything he was unpunished.
