Set pieces

rabbloke

Coach
Why are we so profoundly poor at set pieces? Comments abound with regard to the need for a prolific striker but where are the back up goals when a drought is on. None of us are filled with confidence when we get a penalty let alone a free kick or corner. Not only do we normally fail to create from set pieces but we dont even appear to trouble or pressure the opposition from them.

Yeah our set pieces are awful. I can't remember the last time we scored from a free kick or corner (I can certainly remember the last time we conceded from one though

). Too often they're wasted and go out for goal kicks or throw-ins.

More positivity from SB...

When was the last time we conceded from a free-kick or corner then? It wasn't this season...

Didn't one of our goals (first one maybe?) against Cheltenham on day 1 of this season come from a poorly defended free-kick.

I may be wrong, as I only 'listen' to the games, but that's how it sounded.

Cheltenham's first came from a lofted free-kick on the halfway line that Edwards failed to defend, but it wasn't what I would call a goal conceded from a free-kick - at least it wasn't a goal conceded from an attacking free-kick at any rate, the goal was as good as from open play.

If we score a goal from such a move in the next few games, we'll be saying that we finally managed to score from a set-piece though... wouldn't we?

Still, I take your point and thanks... didn't know it was so far out. Bloomin' commentary.

Yeah - we probably would, but then we'd be desperate for a goal from anywhere. My point, in essence was that we don't have such a problem defending set-pieces as SB seems to think, especially not from corners, and especially since his beloved Flahavan was relieved of the goalkeeper's gloves. There hasn't been a 25-yarder that's beaten the wall and the 'keeper, and nothing from close-in in wide positions in the current campaign, and just about all of the goals, though coming from defensive errors, have been on the counter-attack when teams expose our lack of pace at the back. Hence my calls for Barrett to replace Prior in the centre of defence.

Yeah, what concerns me is that we conceed early and fail to recover. I'd like to see what would happen if we actually took the lead in a game.

The fact we are going to beat Cambridge on Saturday.
The fact that this will be my first game of the season.....
Thats enough for me to cheer about

Actualy....there is!

1) Its only the start of the season
2) we are only 3 points of playoffs
3) There is lots of time to recover
4) There are no extra injuries
5) Smith will be back sooner than expected
6) We WILL beat Cambridge at the weekend
7) We are figuring out our problems early in the season
8) Bart is looking good in goal
9) We have a promotion winning side
10) We have only lost 2 games!!!!!

Man Utd are losing at the moment, which means they may go near bottom of the league..Does that mean they won't get a top five finish???

It is about time we face facts...
IT IS ONLY THE START OF THE SEASON!!!!

Agree with those except...

2.) we are 22nd and it would take us about 3 games to get there assuming consecutive wins!

6.) I will take that but I am not making any more predictions for a while, as my first two were correct!

7.) I hope we figure out our problems during the season but Tilson & Brush will have to be ruthless!!!

9.) Have to agree [with reservations, of course!].

I disagree with your comparison to Manchester United, who are nowhere near as talented as SUFC!

Yea but Barrets not exactly known for his pace as we heard from some Bristol R fans when we signed him. If your swapping for that reason id put Hunt in there.

Why because one person insists on taking them
