Second half attitude...

Thought we were generally superb tonight, so proud of the guys who gave it their all. Some were better than others, but on the whole, excellent and 4-1 flattered Chelsea as we faltered.

Now this isnt a pop at Tilly before anyone starts! But thought its worth discussing the 2 different sides we sent out last night...

By that, I mean in the 1st half, we did a superb job - sitting back, defending for our lives, getting break-aways.

Then 2nd half, we came out and had RIGHT GO at Chelsea - completely different tactics. In hindsight, if we had kept the same tactics as the first half, we may have held on for longer - BUT (before anyone has a go) I dont blame Tilly as it could have gone either way, it was just nice that we were brave enough to think 'we can win this' and take the game too them.

It was after that start that we started leaving more space for Kalou and Cole to exploit, but worth a gamble I reckon!?

For me the problem was that we couldnt keep the ball in their half long enough and if you give a quality side the ball for almost the entire game, they will at some point score. Thats why i would have preferred to see Freedman playing. He might not have given us as much running as Revell, but he could have taken the ball to feet and kept it out a bit longer.

Even in the first half, and this is not a criticism, we were defending as if it was the last minute fo a cup final and we were one up, i.e hoof it anywhere.

I think we ran out of steam. We chased and wroked so hard in the first half, it was impossible to keep it up during the second.

Let's be honest, they had so much possession and many more opportunities than us in the first half (and in the match at Stamford Bridge) that it was only a matter of time before the goals started going in.

In the first game, if they'd got a second, I think it would have been a massacre.

I genuinely think if it had been one nil at half time then we would have seen the same tactics employed in the second half no doubt, but with ballack scoring when he did it changed everything and Tilly said to the boys at half time f*** it lets have a go at em, I for one am delighted we had a go at em loved it, four one was harsh three one seemed fair to me.

Yea, spot on, that's how I saw it. Come out all guns blazing and try and nick a quick one - probably the best bit of the night for me (after Barrett's goal!) - seeing us try to get at them for 10 minutes.

Yes, I noticed the change.......far more even in possession for that first quarter of an hour after the break and....... If that JFC header had gone in?????? If, If, If!..........................

We played some good passing football in the second half....if we can sustain this level of football for the rest of the season, the play-offs are a distinct possibility

What a night and pleased to see us having a go at the start of the second half. I think this was exactly the right thing to do and no pride was lost by the final result. Anyone who watched the game must agree, even if they're not Shrimpers.

I would like to see Anthony Grant showing the same level of commitment for the rest of the season. He played well in the two games against Chelsea, let's hope he wasnt just trying to prove a point to a former employer...

PS. A mate of mine texted me from Brisbane last night after we scored. He was in a pub at 6 in the morning with 2 other Shrimpers. They think they may have woken up half of Brisbane with their celebrations, and he also noted there were no Chelsea fans in sight.

Good work Steve and your two new mates!!

I think it was worth a go. We couldn't sit back like that for the rest of the match. We needed to try and defend from the front. But blimey did they punish us for that.

An inform Chelsea team would have put 6 or 7 past us easy.
They were a different class, but those 20minutes of leading 1-0 will stay with me forver.
Our boys did us SO proud.
Southend till I die!

If indeed. Whilst everyone rightly mentions Revell's header that would have made it 2-0, little has been made of JFC's header. It is painfull to watch, he should have scored or at the very least hit the target and the more you watch it the easier it looks. 2-1 at that stage would have been very interesting!! But it wasn't to be. I just hope that Tilly & Brush can now get everybody motivated for Saturday at Stockport.
