Season Statistics

Neil_F

Coach
I've always been of the opinion that player statistics aren't worth a great deal; they are dependent on the performance of the team as a whole and, as such, are an nfair indicator of a player.

Team statistics though I believe clearly highlight key strengths and weaknesses. Consider then the following stats from our season thus far:

Goals Scored: 41, which is 1.52 per game. Only Swansea, Forest and Leeds have scored more.

Goals Conceded: 40, which is 1.48 per game. Only five teams (3 of the bottom 4) have conceded more.

Home Goals Scored: 21, 1.62 per game. Only five sides have scored more.

Away Goals Scored: 20, 1.43 per game. Only Swansea have scored more

Home Goals Conceded: 14, 1 per game. 8 Teams have a better record.

Away Goals Conceded: 26, 1.86 per game. Only Gills have conceded more.

Penalties Scored: 3

Penalties Conceded: 3

Goals Scored in 1st Half: 20, which 48% of the total.

Goals Conceded in 1st Half: 16, which is 40% of the total.

Goals Scored in 2nd Half: 21, which is 52% of the total.

Goals Conceded in 2nd Half: 24, which is 60% of the total

Goals Scored in last 10: 7, which is 33% of goals scored in 2nd half.

Goals Conceded in last 10: 10, which is 48% of goals conceded in 2nd half!!!!

Goals Scored in 1st 10: 3, which is 14% of goals scored in 1st half.

Goals Conceded in 1st 10: 4, which is 17% of goals conceded in 1st half.

Games Without Scoring: 5

Games without Conceding: 6

Make of it what you will. It doesn't provide an entirely accurate picture givn that, as demonstrated in another post, significant proportions of those of the wins arose with Leon Clarke in the side. Interestingly, all of our clean sheets were in the same period.

Its a shame that if we reduced the goals conceded, we would comfortably be in the playoff zone. :o

Arguably it supports letting go the ones that aren't even good enough to be in the side.
But did he ever let us down? The problem now is that we have no cover in that position at all. The thought of playing Lewis & or Francis there fills me with dread.

Goals Conceded in last 10: 10, which is 48% of goals conceded in 2nd half!!!!

Those stats are linked, I reckon. I wonder how many of the goals conceded in the last 10 were a second or third goal against us...?

Perhaps more than at any time since I've been watching the Shrimpers, over the last 17 years, this is a side that survives on confidence. When we're flying, we keep clean sheets and score loads. When we're falling, we get stuffed good and proper.

I guess that's why, the logic goes, we need a really good centre forward just as much as we need a good centre-half.

Matt

I agree, Matt. I think we are two players short of promotion. On the basis of the existing squad I think we'll finish top half, we may even sneak into the play-offs but we won't get promoted.

A more interesting question is whether we would want to. Last season demonstrated serious weaknesses defensively that lead to our relegation. I don't think those issues have addressed in just half a season, nor were they ever likely to be.

It would be nice to think that lessons have been learnt from last year and reinforced from this. My hope is that the team that takes to the pitch for the first time at Fossetts is playing Championship football and capable of staying there!
