Scouting on Blackpool!!

Manager
A slightly different thread, im bored of tilly this tilly that, tilly in tilly out more times than the hokey kokey.

Did anyone see the blackpool v hull game last night?

Same as ours at brighton, big lad Ben Burgess came on for last 10 mins for blackpool & scored, won everything in the air, a real handful.

Considering we are going there, if blackpool have done there homework then they will know about our problem marking or jumping with big forwards.

Also Blackpool could not defend crosses in the box and if it werent for their keeper, hull should have had 3 or 4.

Hope tillys done his homework and sticks a big lad up front who can win headers, thats our route through.
That rules out Harrold then!!:)

Dont really see the point for our management team to go and watch future opposition. This is simply because last season they did it on a regular basis, and look what good it did us!. (the only success was watching Man Utd before the cup game and pinpointing their weaknesses!!).
I remember when Judas was here in 93 and he was asked the same question. He replied 'let the opposition worry about us,and not us about them'.

Agree with you about Burgess. He will win everything in the air against Barrett, Clarke and Flahavan.

IMHO, we need to get Richards in the back line, not just for the JPT or Carling Cup games but full-time.

I've seen the highlights from Brighton this morning. Having Richards either in front of or behind Forster should have prevented his 2nd headed goal and I just can't believe the comedy defending for the 3rd goal. No-one marking the runner and, of more concern, no-one attacking a ball dropping in the 6 yard area. Then all of Clarke, Barrett and Flahavan wailing and flailing their arms at each other and their teammates!

Spot on, Milkey... spot on.

Flahavan, Clarke and Barrett are all fine individual players - some of the better ones we've seen in recent years. However, as a central unit, they are gash. Totally bloody useless. 4 league games in, and we're already boasting 9 in the "Goals Against Column".

I cannot understand why everyone is having a pop against the likes of Matt Harrold - is it because he's tall and ginger? Let's ignore the fact, shall we, that he makes countless space and countless goal-scoring opportunities...?

We've scored in every game we've played so far this season. We scored two away at Brighton, and apparently "bossed" the game. Yet, to many, we somehow "still" need another striker and we haven't replaced Freddy.

I'm obviously a bit dim, but it seems to me to be blindingly - embarrassingly - obvious, that our problems lie with the Flahavan-Clarke-Barrett axis. It isn't working at all. We're conceding more than two goals per game. It wouldn't matter if we had Thierry bloody Henry up front - if you concede 2.25 goals per game, you're in big bloody trouble.

What Tilson does need to do is to grow some balls. Barrett probably should have been sold to the Ewes. It would have been desperately sad to see him go, he's a great player, a fans' favourite, individually skilled and talented.

But he and Peter Clarke simply do not work in the same team. Clarke is the younger player, and the one for whom we paid money, so that would suggest that we need to hold onto him for now.

Alongside Clarke we need someone who is (i) brilliant in the air; (ii) tall; and (iii) a wise, old head who can marshall the defence. It doesn't take a genius to work out that we've not really replaced Spencer Prior; Efe was a good attempt at finding a replacement - but at the end of the day, Efe is too much of a lone wolf to build a defence around.

That's what we need. I know that such players - the Martin Keowns or Dion Dublins of this world - don't exactly grow on trees, but my goodness, that's what we need.

Forget the next Freddy. If we don't find a really tall, experienced and commanding centre half soon, we're in trouble.

It's worth pointing out that Blackpool were doing pretty well without Burgess on and I think it's pretty unjust to say that he changed the game. It's funny how different people interpret football - I thought that they barely got the ball near him until the goal and is impact aside from that was minimal. Looked like a definite foul from my perspective too although the lack of appeal from the Hull defender suggested otherwise.

The real problem we are going to have against Blackpool is stopping Hoolahan and Parker in the channels because right now we are looking very weak around the sides. Personally, I'd like to see Francis starting although I'm not fussy who is dropped to accomodate him.

Gilbert is undoubtedly an asset going forwards due to his willingness to run behind the full backs but Wilson has reasonable presence against high balls which seems to be something we can't handle right now.

Top post, and echo's what I have been saying for weeks. Our porblem is not up front (although things could be better), but its at the back.

At this level we will score 60 odd league goals this year, but at this rate will be shipping 80 again.
