Scottish Shrimpers Contingent grows

Aberdeen Shrimper

Guest
I met 3 folk from Scotland at teh S O L on Saturday, 2 from Inverness and one from Glasgow and what with our Scottish connection regards Hamy and Foran coming from the SPL there is a definite Scottish link growing.

Maybe it is time to start a Scottish Shrimpers Club????

We could try to enlist more folk up here to follow the blues.......or maybe i am talking a load of bullocks!!

Alternatively with all this talk about Celtic and Rangers joining the Premiership, why don't we do the decent thing and join the SPL?

That actually sparked a heated debate on our way home on the train on Sat.

I always tend to big up the Football League, even when we were in our L2 promotion winning season, I said we could happily compete in, the albeit lower reaches of, the SPL. However one of the guys who came down with me felt that a team who played with such a lack of passion as we did on Sat would struggle & for the life of him cannot understand why Foran & Hammell would ever want to play for us over Motherwell. OK, the drink had been flowing but for some reason he just couldn't grasp the fact that we pay them more, they play in front of double the average Motherwell get (and that's only so high due to the 3/4 Old Firm visits they get each year) plus the chance to play in arenas such as the SofL and Elland Rd etc.

The discussion about how the CCC is the 5th biggest league in Europe (average of clubs turnover) also held no sway whatsoever! This also came on a day when the Scottish papers were full of the depression in the SFL, Dundee alone are responsbile for a reported £22m of £34m debt amongst the bottom 3 Scottsh divisions.

Our squad this year would I feel make top 6 in SPL. We'd never win the thing, with Rangers, Celtic & Hearts (even maybe Aberdeen this season) but I'd definitely say we're on a par with Hibs, if not certainly Falkirk!

Glasgow, I totally agree and have the self same argument with folk that i work with. After spending 5 years in Aberdeen and going to quite a few Dons games (I would never pay another football club regularly though, always corporate) I would say that we would hold our own in the SPL and defiantly would end up in the top half most seasons.

Good stats and facts by the way

Further backup to our argument: -

Yeovil bid to sign Dons midfielder

Now if clubs like Yeovil can afford comparable if not better wages than Aberdeen, what does that really say about the state of the SPL in general?

Is that a Scottish dialect creeping into your written prose? :p

Is that not proper written English then? How can I get that message across then? :o

Funnily enough we were just having a discussion about that in the office, as in how some people pick up the accent & others don't. I'm sure those who know me off of here, will back me up in the fact that my Essex accent still remains. I do however, sometimes tend to construct sentences in a Weegie dialect!

It was a play on the word gate, which is pronounced in your neck of the woods `get', so `double the average Motherwell gate' ... but clearly I was being far too smart for my own good lol

I work for The Sunday Post so I'm intrigued who these journalists in your car were. I've been trying to get the sport department to write about Steve Hammell for months. Maybe the arrival of Foran has sprung them into action and the Glasgow office has sent a car load????

One is the Sports Reporter for the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser, the other works for the East Kilbride News as well as agency work covering Celtic/Rangers/Scottish internationals for AFP.
