School dinners

Just chatting to some mates and we got onto the subject of our old school dinners. Made me crack up when he told me how he found 3 hairs in his mash potato but was told to eat it anyway!

So what are your memories of school dinners, good or bad?!

Flippin' brilliant back in the early 70s - all home cooked stuff, stews, shepherd's pie, chips and gravy....yum! Pink custard and tapioca type stuff for afters...not so yum!

I think the rhyme went something like...

Hot snot & bogey pie,
All mixed up in a dead dogs eye,
Turn it round 'til it's nice and thick,
Wash it down with a cold cup of sick.

:puke

King Edmunds during the 80's and school dinners was more akin to this!!!

There was a dessert that they used to dish up once a week, had a pastry type base and the filling tasted a bit like condensed milk, and a sprinkling of choc dust on top...was the best thing about school dinners. Wish I knew what it was called!

Anyone work in a school that knows please?

In primary school, one of my mates found a tooth in his mash potato :puke

My missus bangs on about a similar dish from her school days. I think it's called gypsy tart or something.

Best one was when I was in year 8 (2003).

There I was, money on card, queuing in anticipation as to what delicious treat awaited me.

Sausage, mash, gravy. I take it over to the table, get the fork ready- take one big chunk of the mash and gobble it down. On the second bite I hit something, as a reaction I spat the mouthful out, and there in the middle of my saliva diluted potato was a green old two pence peace. Being the stingy guy I am I ate around it, and when I was full, took it back, complained and got my money back!

'kin revolting apart from a Caramel tart that I've never found outside of Chase Cross Comprehensive. So I had a chip butty, mars bar and a can of fizzy pop every day! Jamie Oliver would drop a testicle but it did me no harm

My missus now works in a school kitchen and brought me a chicken curry home last week that was lovely - oh how it's changed!
