Sammy the Shrimp

I believe that I heard Micky say that it was Sammy's last game today after 5/6 years.

Those that know me will know that I had a long association with the mascots - it's what got me into the club on a working level many moons ago amongst other roles.

I cannot divulge too much because their isn't a person inside them (honest)!

I was lucky to be very close friends with Sammy the Shrimp (the duvet one with the udders and then the flower pot turned upside down, then became best friends with Elvis J Eel on 26th December 24 years ago!

I know how much effort and commitment it takes to look after those mascots. I have never met the guy inside of Sammy (Dave I think) but must say he has been brilliant. His social media interaction and his nous at games was brilliant and he will be missed.

If you read this Sammy, best of luck in the future. I hope that your next in line is half as good as you.

Dave has been brilliant for me with the JBs, providing me with photos of Sammy "chez nous" especially during covid, and sometimes doing competitions for me for newsletters. It was news to me yesterday that it was his last game. Thank you for everything Dave.

Now that Dave's retired, is it time to revamp the Sammy The Shrimp costume? It's so restrictive, meaning the person inside can't run or do funny and entertaining things in it. I'm told it's more to do with the boots.
Some of those mascots in American football and baseball are funny, and they go out to entertain the crowd.

To be fair, this one was revamped not that long ago and cost a LOT. I'm not sure we need a new one.

The boots are fine...there's ways of doing things (swap for a pair of other shoes when you know you have something planned).

Trust me when I say this, restricted was the upside down plant pot. Weighed a tonne, had to look through the smallest mouth, had 4 metal rods either side of your shoulder, had knee pads that didn't bend, oh and didnt have any fingers!

Just needs tweaking then. I heard Dave would like to have been funnier, but was restricted. He's most welcome to come on here and give his thoughts, and best memories, should he desire to share.

Afraid not. That was me, Darren was Leo the Lion when we had the duvet shrimp with udders that wore a black blazer.

Darren left the role of Leo the Lion after 5th October 1999 due to me being 'a pathetic whinging child' after a media argument between us when we were filming for Terry Aldertons MYFC documentary. We are fine now, ive grown up! 🤣
I believe that's Mr Posnack. He had to give it up after it rained one day and the pink dye in the costume gave him a cherry complexion that took six months to fade out.
That costume was made of many random things. It also had screwdrivers in the head area that would scrape you if you made any sudden movements!

I long for the day when Elviis the eel rocks back into the Hall.
Elvis J Eel (J for Jellied) has been mentioned after a drunken conversation with an Australian by someone else that used to be a best mate to Elvis in a pub that is close to a Railway station.

Who knows what lies ahead, two mascots are better than one though because they can bounce off of each other.

My two youngest were desperate to have pictures with Sammy. These were both in recent years so I assume it was Dave in the suit.

Thank you so much for being great with them, you genuinely made their days. My son has the picture on his wall which he is super proud of. He always pulls the stupidest of faces when having a picture but has the nicest smile in this photo.

Big boots to fill, hope they have someone lined up to take over. Otherwise Ben you’ll have to DJ from inside Sammy 😉

I did Elvis a couple of times whilst leaving a CD running when he was around...

But I don't think Sammy would fit me, I've eaten and drank way too much!

Plus I left my Sammy days behind in 1999! That Shrimp has sailed.
