Rubbish songs

C C Csiders

Life President
Following on from teh Worst Song ever thread what about owning up to actually quite liking a song that is considered, widely, to be a rubbish song, or a novelty record.

I'll own up here and confess to quite liking:

Grandad by Clive Dunn

and

Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs by Brian and Michael

Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy.

Neil Diamond - Cracklin' Rosey, Forever in BlueJeans.

I do like a bit of cheese.

Surely there is no way on earth that either of those two songs have ever been described as rubbish by anyone. If they have it is a heinous crime against humanity.

I've been walking these streets so long............

I agree! I love it, and sing it often in a loud voice.

Ready for a virtual duet MK?

After three..........

"Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away, like the snow and the rain
There's been a load of compromising
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shining on me..."

"Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone..........."

in the old days of 45rpm singles in a jukebox, the company used to change the records on a regular basis, keeping the most played ones.
A group of lads in there managed to keep Roger Millers king of the Road on the juke box for two years by playing two or three times every night (and weekend lunches)

I quite like Summer of 69 which got a mention on the other thread and Jack and Diane by John cougar Mellankamp although they slot firmly into the American AOR is strongly dislike.
A lot of 70's glam is universally scorned these days as well, yet it was the music of my early teens so is remebered fondly.

The height of musical snobbery for me was the '79 mod revivals blanket dismissal of the Merton Parkas , to the extent that the original recordings of the Mods Mayday (live at the Bridgehouse) had a picture of theMP's on it with a large red cross through it and a caption stating that they are not on the recording.

Later pressings and the cd's included a couple of tracks. Ironic that one of the MP's went on to pair up with Paul Weller to form Style Council....

Heavy Metal fans used also make a lot of noise about bands not being "proper" metal

Well, Im glad I can say Im not the only closet clenn campbell fan on here, there ....feel alot better now.Its probably more to do with listening to the music your parents like to play for some strange reason, As my 9 year old daughter often berats me for listening to my sort of music ( soul/jazzfunk and a bit of ska) but just the other day I caught her singing away to Golden Brown by the stranglers!

Quality tune!

All together now................

near a tree by a river
there's a hole in the ground
where an old man of aran
goes around and around
and his mind is a beacon
in the veil of the night
for a strange kind of fashion
there's a wrong and a right
but he'll never, never fight over you
