Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd is reportedly in the race to sign Republic of Ireland Under 21 striker Roy O'Donovan.

With Boothroyd (pictured) looking on during a scouting trip to Ireland, the Cork City man, 21, scored once and hit the post in his side's 2-0 win over Waterford United on Tuesday.

And as O'Donovan's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, there are rumours he may be available for a cut-price €500,000 (£330,000).

However, Watford would face competition from several sides should they firm up their interest in the youngster.

Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood has apparently been trailing O'Donovan for almost a year and is believed to be ready to make his move next week.

Hull and Fulham have also been linked with a move for the player, who has scored 20 goals in four months for Cork so far this season.

Are we still interested in him? I know Tilly has long been a fan of him, but what is the situation, I see what are not linked to him in this passage from Skysports.

Theres no way even if we were still interested, we stand a chance against those sort of clubs.

We were, but i reckon he is well out of our range now having been relegated. Worth noting that Sheff Wednesday were interested initially, but having had him scouted on several occasions they quickly pulled out of the race, with Brian Laws apparently saying he was "Crap" and is only valued at that price on the reputation of Doyle...

I heard rumours a few weeks ago that we were still interested in him but they were nothing more than unsubstantiated rumours. If these other clubs are indeed in for him though, I'm not sure I fancy our chances to be able to complete both in terms of the football we have to offer (especially against the likes of Watford or Fulham) or the financial deal we can do. That being said, I have faith that if Tilly said he wanted him, Ron would do all that he could to make the funds available, as he does with all the players.

however we have a couple of irish players who seem settled and may be that we can offer him much more first team footie... don't forget we pipped hammell from southampton (i think) and so who knows... i think he has a decent record but 300k is a lot of money and would definitely **** off a lot of our strikers, but last night showed that there is still an inability of our strikers to put the ball in the net, especially when it's in the box

Derby definately wanted Hammel not so sure about southampton. It depends on what he wants? Does he want o play premiership reserve football and have to live in london, or would he rather come and be a fans favourite and play every week. Who knows. It dpends on what players want to do. Watford will sign Helguson soon so not sure whether AB is really interested or not.

yep.. i would say that there are a lot of positives about coming to southend over somewhere like watford.. but i think the stumbling block is that we need someone proven in the english league (to justify 300k) and the fact that we already have a lot of strikers. i think if we were serious about him we would have already heard something by now
