What is there to say about Paul Weller that hasn't already been said? Founder member of one of the greatest British bands ever, that still have a huge following and a mass of tribute bands. A vaguely dodgy outing with the softer The Style Council - but still produced some top tunes, and then The Changing Man rediscovered himself in the early 90's with the romantic, folk tinged album Wild Wood and has continued to release excellent music ever since.

Still highly regarded today with albums nominated for the coveted Mercury Music Prize, awarded the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement, the influence for any number of mod-revival indie bands, vote Paul Weller - a worthy winner of this competition.

Do I need to bring out the big guns yet? Here's some examples of his genius.

Paul Weller - great to start with, then one decent hit with the Style Council, then a bit pretentious in his solo career. However, the other guy is not my cup of tea at all.

Weller by a country mile. The Jam one of the best bands this country ever produced. Scary to think he wrote so many classics before he was even 20.

Weller for me - can't stand the bloke, but some of the Jam singles were great pop songs of my youth.

Some of The Style Council stuff was pretty good - I liked the greater soul influence and always good to hear "the ideologically sound trumpet" (Billy Bragg) to the fore of the music, though echo what has been said that the most annoying thing about Weller is Weller himself.

He's gone up his own arse of late (a bit like Weller did post Style Council in my humble opinion), but 'Pretty Hate Machine' and 'The Downward Spiral' rank highly among my greatest albums of all time. 'Hurt', 'Closer', 'Terrible Lie', 'March of the Pigs' - all top top tunes.

Hmm... I've never heard of Trent Reznor (turns out he's in Nine Inch Nails)

vs. Going Underground, Town Called Malice, You do Something to Me, Wildwood, Changing Man.

No contest.

Tough call. I could easily vote for either, I'd say Weller has a greater volume of songs that I rate, Reznor has done some belters. Weller is a bit more traditional wheras Reznor is more modern which I like, plus were it not for Reznor we wouldn't have Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Reznor by a whisker.

Trent Renzor......hmmmm, sounds like an anagram!!! Never heard of him or Nine Inch Nails (God, some of these group names make me feel positively ancient!), but I'd never hear the last of it anyway, if I didn't vote for Weller! Just as well that Down in the Tube Station at Midnight and That's Entertainment are top tracks!

Can we do a poll for Best cover please?! I think I might win that!
reckon that is right, Cash here for anyone who hasn't seen this recording:
