Ok so here we go and today's first heat is between.

Chas and Dave - ldnfatso v Stevie Wonder - OBL

Over to you people....Let the competition begin.

OBL has asked me to post this on her behalf.

Born Stevland Hardway Morris, Stevie Wonder is one of the all time greats in the music world. Acclaimed as a singer and song writer the world over, his first US hit coming at the age of just 12. Blind from just after birth, Stevie signed for Motown records aged just 11.

The very impressive list of songs he wrote and performed himself include some truly classic numbers - Superstition; My Cherie Amour; Uptight; You are the Sunshine of My Life; Sir Duke; As; Isn't She Lovely (following the birth of his daughter) and Gangsta's Paradise. Hugely sampled by other artists, he also wrote, or co-wrote, for some of the biggest names including Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles); It's a Shame (The Spinners); Let's get Serious (Jermaine Jackson); What Happens To (Andy Williams) and To Know You is to Love You and Your Kiss is Sweet (Syreeta).

Wonder also wrote songs for such well known acts as The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Dionne Warwick, The Four Tops and The Beach Boys.

Of course, there was some saccharin, his only solo number 1 to date in the UK has been the much ridiculed I Just Called To Say I love You BUT it's a song that is known the world over. Compare that to the power of tracks like As and the beautiful My Cherie Amour and you'll realise Stevie Wonder is a diverse writer and performer.

He's had 10 number ones in the US charts, produced probably one of the best albums ever in Songs In The Key of Life, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

No links from me here, I hope my words will encourage you to go and seek out some of his music and listen to it yourselves today.

No competition. Pre '82 (according to Naps) Stevie Wonder was truly amazing. Songs In The Key Of Live, Innervision, Story Book...classic albums.

To be fair most, if not al of those songs are rubbish and couldnt hold a candle to Rabbit.

Cant see anything other than a Chas n Dave victory here.

Wouldn't **** on a Stevie Wonder record if it was on fire - it's Hodges & Peacock all the way for me. Not only unique songwriters but incredible musicians too. Check their '60s and '70s session credentials - they played on some top stuff. Total legends.

I'm no Stevie Wonder fan, there was a 'best of' record in our house and even when I was 7 I could tell it was mostly syrupy crap. However 'Superstition' is a quality tune, and if he had a hand in 'Tears of a Clown' (never knew that) then that seals it, as that one of the best songs ever recorded.

Lets face it, Fasto only chose C&D as they support his beloved Spurs. :whistling: How IS he allowed on a Southend United forum :stunned:

I like Chas & Dave, have a copy of 'The Sideboard Song' and enjoyed seeing them at Knebworth in '79 when they nearly upstaged Led Zep ... but 'He's Misstra Knowitall' just about trumps anything they've done, except 'Snooker Loopy' of course.

Now ol' Meo as we all knows
Got loadsa dappa suits
London bred and he keeps his head
'Though he's got Italian roots
Emotional but he keeps his cool
'Til he reaches the finals
And whether he wins or whether he don't
'I always bite me eyeballs'

Pure genius. I'm still voting for Stevie though, "Songs in The Key Of Life" is in my all time top ten

What, you are having a laugh aren't you. There was a reason they were first up on stage you know.

Having said that, I did see C and D at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft about 8 weeks ago and they were brilliant so they get my vote

Not around when this closes so just want to say thanks to those who've voted for Stevie so far. Don't have a problem with Chase and Dave, admire their skill with lyrics but are they known in any other country than here? Stevie Wonder is a recognised singer and songwriter across the whole civilised world.
