Let’s start with the first scene from the very first episode:
Local kid Snot Boogie has been shot dead. Detective Jimmy McNulty is talking to a street guy.
Mcnulty: So every Friday night you and your boys would shoot craps and when the pot built up Snot would snatch it and run? You let him do that?
Street guy: We'd catch him and beat his *** but it would never go past that.
Mcnulty: I gotta ask you, if everytime he played he took the money and ran away, why did you let him play?
Street guy: We got to. This is America man

Saw the first half of the first season of True Blood.
I vote for The Wire.

Oops, I accidentally voted the Wire. Slip of the mouse!
Whilst I make a case for True Blood, I have to despair at the first round opponent I've drawn. Having watched all of the Wire and all of True Blood, there is little I can do to avoid a landslide victory in favor of The Wire.
I once summed this show up to a friend as "HillBilly Vampire Porn", and stick by this description even today. Apart from the fact you get some very fine acting performances by some very likable actors, you cannot deny the enjoyable sex scenes which generally feature Ana Paquin..... Russell Edgington is portrayed brilliantly by Denis O'Hare. One of the main characters, if not THE main character is Bill Compton, portrayed by Essex Lad (Brentwood) Stephen Moyer.
I can't really preach to those who prefer the wire, so I'll just leave you with some clips of my favorite character, Eric Northman.
