Today's referee is the relatively inexperienced official, Jeremy Simpson fron Carnforth in Lancashire.

He is in his second season as a League referee and has not refereed Southend before. He has had quite a few Championship appointments amongst his 29 games this season which have produced a below average 85 yellows and 5 reds (all 5 reds were before the end of September).

Assisting will be Ian Dudley from Nottingham, one of Nigel Miller's accomplices at Wembley last season and Dan Meeson from Newcastle-under-Lyme who was lino on Good Friday two years ago at Bradford. Ross Joyce from Cleveland will be 4th Official.

A local Lancs ref then!
Strange appointment for a sizeable game.
Is it the same Lino from Wembley who didn't give the foul on Bilel (goal two) or a pen for rough stuff on Britt.
Worried.

he might be a 'local' ref, but realistically nobody supports rochdale do they! you cant ban an official from doing local sides in an area like lancashire as there are probably 10 teams within 45 minutes of each other.

By all the accounts that I have seen & read the officials had a good game; we seem to be on a roll with reasonable officials of late.
What was the "sexy lino" stuff about?

The lino in front of the Southend fans was really on the ball. Got every decision right including their "offside" goal so he was instantly liked by all our fans.

He didn't respond to our chants of "Lino, lino give us a wave" so we resorted to "One sexy lino, there's only one sexy lino".

Do wonder if the Officials complained about the over-watering of the pitch, which resulted in a complete quagmire on part of the touchline. The 'sexy lino' had to do his job while doing his utmost not to stack it in the mud!
