Ring of Death on the XBox 360

I just know this will mean something to you lot. To me, it sounds very much like a toothpaste for diseased teeth!

Ok, who knows what, and how do we sort it out?

My sons did this a month ago. You phone them, they send a return label and arrange for UPS to collect the machine which goes to Germany. Within a week they sent a brand new one.

Was that within warranty Steveo? Not sure if ours is or not, it's borderline, he needs to go and find the receipt and warranty details which he took in his room to look at - I'm not venturing in there, I value my life too much!

Does not matter xbox will fix red ring of death problem

Microsoft changed the terms and conditions on their Xbox warranties after their design fault become to much of a public relations disaster. The warranty is now for three years from the date of purchase BUT only covers the three red rings of death, which is where the design fault comes in as the CPU heat sink comes into contact with the main board causing a short out. One and two red rings of death are not covered by their extended warranty but only by the original 1 year standard. This is the way I understand it anyway.

Kay, if you or your son do have to buy a new one can I suggest getting it from either Game Station or Game. Their one year return to shop for a replacement guarantee is a God send. I'm on my third now and each time Iv'e just driven into Southend and within half an hour I was home again with a new one. The last time they didn't even ask to see what was wrong with it but just looked at the receipt and took my word for it. So quick and easy and saved on all the aggro of sending it back through the official channel and with Microsoft you'll get a refurbished unit whereas taking it back to either of the retailers I mentioned you'll get a brand new one straight out of the box.

So depending on which fault you actually have will depend on what your options are.

Merry Xmas

Phil

is it worthwhile spending £30 on one that has three red rings? (might be 2, can't remember.) Will it cost a lot to fix or should I just buy one new/second hand?

In truth I'd stay no. Ask yourself why the person is selling it and why if it's three rings he didn't have it replaced under warranty. If it's two then it'll cost you to get it fixed and probably won't last long before something more serious happens to it. Also bare in mind that if you did choose to have a two ring problem fixed by Microsoft out of warranty the minimum it'll cost is £50.00 plus p&p. £129.00 will get you a new base console and controller with warranty from Game Station, Game or a number of other high street retailers.

Dont think it was, give them a ring and see what happens.

i fixed mine when i got the rrod. you can get a pack off ebay that costs 1.99 with instructions and everything that is needed to sort out the heatsink problem. takes an hour or 2 if u've not done it before and is quite fiddly.

Ive had this 3 times, first two were fine as I payed 70 quid each time, then got them both refunded. But the third time I was 2 weeks out of extended warranty (for the 3 red lights) and got a friend of a friend to fix it with his own kit..
