Ricky Gervais: Politics

palexander

Life President
Gone on a real comedy trip this week. Ordered "Big Train" and "The Day Today" DVD's and last night brought Richard Pryor's stand up DVD (with free 'Stir Crazy'!) and Ricky Gervais' new one, Politics...

Politics is pretty similar to 'Animals' if you've seen that, but this time Gervais seems much more self-indulgent. The reason I love 'Animals' is that Gervais is very laid back - almost embarrassed to be on stage - and this certainly adds something to the show. In 'Politics' he laughs at his own jokes far too much and is very much 'I am the man', which puts an edge on things IMO.

The content isnt quite as good as Animals and not as well presented, but there are some very good laugh out loud bits...

"(Ricky talking about sweat shops)... You know, the chaiman of Nike makes £5.2b dollars a year... for one of his workers in a chinese sweat-shop to make that money, they would have to work 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for 10,000 years... (walks away shaking head).... but they dont want to do it....... lazy..."

Anyway, it is probably *just* worth getting, if only for the brilliant extra of Ricky interviewing his mate from XFM.

Looking forward to getting the other DVD's today... two classic comedies! If you have never seen "The Day Today", do yourself a favour... its a spoof news programme with Chris Morris, Steve Coogan and many more of that comedy group.

"News Felch"
"Those are the headlines... god I wish they werent"
"Peter, you've lost the news"

Ahhh, they say laughter is the best medicine... unless you're asthmatic, then its ventalin...

Went to see 'Politics' at Hammersmith Odeon this year and thought it was very funny - has the DVD got the introduction that was shown before the live show, Ricky Gervais standing outside the Houses of Parliament?

That's the one - they gave that away on a free DVD at the show. Absolutely bloody hilarious and totally politically incorrect!

Nah, its one of my 'catchphrases' - I believe 'borrowed' from a John Thompson stand-up...

Its embarassing to think John Thompson would steal material from Joe Pasquale... *shudder*

Yea, its on the DVD as an extra... was very good - but I prefered the Animals one as it has that hot chick from the Office in it!

Pasquale is very good! Went to see him in Weymouth last summer with Bashful and Little Bashful, and it was well worth the money

Wish we had a decent  emoticon for these moments!

I used to work with Pasquale's (future) son-in-law and he said that Pasquale was a right miserable ******* and was nothing like he is on stage. I guess thats the idea of 'acting' but he sounded like a complete git...

Oh and that squeaky voice?.... gruffer than a Scarborough coal-miner apparantly! We should see soon cos I hear Pasquale is going to be on "I'm a celeb..." and has been told not to do 'the voice'...

Yes animals is funny but I wouldn't go as far to say its the best I've seen. That would either have to be seeing Lee Evans live at Southend or Peter Kay's live at Bolton Albert Halls.

Can't wait for Christmas now, what with all this stuff about Little Britain, That Peter Kay Things, Politics and The Office Christmas special. All high on my list. Should be a hilarious Christmas.

All about what tickles your funny bone I suppose. Maybe THE best is going a little far! But I did enjoy it.

I also think "No Cure For Cancer" is brilliant, I've got the vid and sadly the audio version too...

Bill Hicks is (was) a funny guy and spot on in some of his observations. I saw a great Lee Evans stand up on Paramount2 the other week - I think it was called "Out of this World" - was excellent, but Evans does grate on me a bit with his one comedy voice for every character! I saw him at Southend too...

I also saw Steve Coogan at the Cliff's a few years back on his "Man who thinks he's it" tour - that was probably the best performance I've seen live in person. A very, very funny bloke... though I read in an interview a while back that he said the Cliff's is the worst venue he has played, saying the audience were like Zombies!? Probably confused the smell of urine from everyone ****ing themselves laughing...
