Richard Eckersley will not be offered deal by Southend United

Fair play to Brown, sounds like it was the right decision. It's no secret that we need back up in the full back positions, but it sounds like Brown wants competition rather than cover, which I'm all for.

Absolutely. I don't really understand the phrase "squad player" for a club like Southend United. We need each and every player to be capable and worthy of holding their own in the first XI when they get their chance.

Having said that I am slightly surprised that this decision was made before the game on Wednesday but it at least allows the player to move on to find other employment. And on the plus side that may mean that Brown has more players in mind that we might see in the next week or so.

Which is why I don't understand why we are so desperate to hang onto Prosser and Deegan

Agree with Prosser, but Deegan is someone we need to hang on to in my opinion. We don't have another player who offers what Deegan does in the enforcer role. If we go through a bad run and start conceding goal after goal, Deegan is the player you'd look to bring in the next game to sit in front of the back four and settle us down again.

'Squad player' is such an emotive term isn't it? All clubs use it and all clubs have squads, there the neutrality of the term ends. If you are a squad player, by and large you are not amongst the first 11 names selected for the first team. You will be the one who is bought in as an 'impact sub', (another derogatory term), or being around just in case one of the first chosen gets injured or loses form. If I was a pro I know how I would feel about being a squad player, which is why I don't see Luke staying if the right offer comes along. I must admit I'm pretty ambivalent about Deegan, but Prosser I would keep if we can.

I am not sure I would call Prosser a squad player. He started last season as one of our first choice centre backs and I would expect him to be pushing Barrett this year. Centre back is a position you need cover for and Prosser is more than capable of holding his place in the team if he gets the chance.

It is though difficult to see Deegan starting many games so I would certainly put him in the "squad player" category.

i think the squad player type position is a good way to bring the youngsters in. if you want someone to be a back up to do a job from time to time then a youngster is a good shout. someone like White is so consistent and so rarely injured that a backup right back isn't likely to get much of a run unless there's a big injury in which case try to get a longer term loan as specific cover.
i'm really hoping a young full back really pushes on and makes it into the first team squad

Once upon a time I thought that Johnny Herd would go the distance................which unfortunately ended up being at Bishop's Stortford.
