The Ref Aficionado.
League games against Oldham commenced in the early ‘60s and we have played them pretty regularly since. We hold a clear lead with 18 wins to their 13 with 12 draws.
Woman in charge for Saturday’s televised match is will be Kirsty Dowle from Canterbury, just turned 33 who is in her second season of National League and Football League refereeing. Her second NL match was our game at Bromley last season, a 2-1 defeat and a yellow for Mooney and three of theirs. It was suggested by some that she didn't get around the pitch as well as most. Her fourth NL match was at Roots Hall for our 2-0 win against Oxford City when it was thought by most, including me, that she did okay. There were cautions for Taylor and Husin and one Oxonian.
Her other Southend match was last season’s Boxing Day home - clash with Barnet, also televised. Rather less good and she was also saddled with a couple of poor Assistants in that one. A 0-2 defeat and yellows for Collin and Kensdale and 3 of theirs.
A FIFA women's referee who has taken charge of the Women’s Cup Final (2022), women’s international matches and loads of top-level women’s league games.
She worked on the railways as a revenue protection officer for many years before becoming a full-time professional referee. She has a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology. She has joined the Elite Referees Development Group for fast tracking through the men’s game. This means she can be allocated to pretty much any game and not be dependent on the normal promotion parameters.
For some reason, she had a break from National League/Football League matches for the first 5 months of this season concentrating on the Women’s game. She’s back doing NL games now and has done 6 games at this level with 15 yellow cards and no reds. These matches include Oldham’s 2-2 draw at Easleigh a couple of months ago.
Assistant, Paul Lister-Flynn, has not been at Roots Hall before. However Paul Lister from Chertsey has! Also assisting will be Harley McKittrick from Coventry, Fourth Official is Will Briers from Sussex who makes his first visit to Roots Hall although it will be his second visit to Essex in a week as I saw him referee Hornchurch’s shock victory over Worthing on Tuesday. He did pretty well.
