Ref Watch Refwatch ........ Oldham (A)

Mick

Life President
League games against Oldham commenced in the early ‘60s and we have played them pretty regularly since. We hold a clear lead with 18 wins to their 13 with 11 draws.

The appointment for this game is somewhat of a surprise.

The man in charge tomorrow is James Linington from Newport, Isle of Wight, formerly a self-employed plumber until 2016 when he was one of the 18 referees selected to become full-time professionals in the newly formed Select Group 2 predominantly to do Championship matches. Since that date he has refereed over 200 Championship matches and this will be his first National League level match since he did the Weymouth Torquay game in 2008.

He had a fitness issue at the start of this season but he had recovered sufficiently to do the Wimbledon/Ipswich League Cup tie and to perform Fourth Official duties at Millwall last week. This appointment is presumably for him to build on his fitness levels during the International break.

He will be refereeing his tenth Southend match, the most recent of which was the FA Cup tie at Millwall in 2016/17 when a late goal deprived us of a deserved replay. Cautions to Leonard, Wordsworth, Cox and McLaughlin and Millwall's keeper.

Before that was the 4-1 home win over Bury just before Christmas, 2015, when he did fine although cautions for Coker, Atkinson and Worrall and one of theirs. Previously it was the game at Burton towards the end of 2014/15 when he sent off one of theirs in the first half but abject tactics and substitutions from Brown turned the game on its head and we finished up losing against 10 men. He also cautioned 3 of theirs and Timlin.

Prior to that it was the away match at Cheltenham earlier that season when Conor Clifford scored the only goal of the game. Once again, he sent off a home player in addition to two cautions to each team. Binnon-Williams and Weston were our two.

Before that it was the rather damp home game against Newport 2013/14, which he refereed rather well, except for his failure to get a grip on the time wasting.

Next came the one game in which he was less impressive - the home game against Dagenham & Redbridge in the League, earlier in 2013/14 when Phillips was dismissed (on the say so of an Assistant Referee) with a couple of yellows for us (Leonard and White) and one for them. Even though he was way short of his usual standard and somewhat inconsistent, I didn't think he was quite as terrible as was made out. The appeal against the Phillips dismissal was unsuccessful.

The season before that he was in charge of our wretched performance when we lost 2-0 at home to Plymouth. No cards for us.

His first two Southend matches were the 3-0 home win against Carlisle in 2008/9 and then the following season's 1-1 draw at Wycombe. For Southend he only cautioned Grant and Macca respectively in those two matches.

His card count has invariably been average throughout.

Assisting will be Graeme Fyvie from Sunderland, one of the officials at Hartlepool when Corr was wrongfully dismissed way back and William Vaughan from Liverpool, not to be confused with Vaughan Williams, making his Southend debut. Jonathan Chadwick, from Wigan and a Director at wholesale confectioners, Cakes and Dreams Ltd, will be standing by as Fourth Official.

I often wonder if the refs and linesman etc read these posts, and their thoughts on them if they do .

How do they travel to a game and has there ever been a postponement because they were stuck on planes, trains and (or) automobiles?
