We have an outstanding home record against Hartlepool in league matches with just 3 defeats in 24 games producing 15 wins. One of those defeats was last season when we went down 3-2 after leading 2-1. In three of their last six visits to the Hall they've had a player sent off. Since that latest home defeat, we’ve played them twice away, both matches finishing 0-0, leaving our overall League record against them as won 24, drawn 11 and lost 14. We have yet to beat them in a National League match.
Those of you who dislike both dentists and referees are going to have a field day. Man in charge is Dr Ben Atkinson, specialising in maxillofacial surgery at Royal London Hospital. He is a keen and experienced scuba diver and a domestic property developer in Liverpool, where he gained his degree in dentistry and another in molecular physiology.
He got a mid-season promotion to the National League at the start of 2023 and six months later was promoted to the Football League. He has not refereed Southend, or Hartlepool before.
His 13 matches thus far this season have comprised 4 League One, 4 League Two, 4 Cups and Trophies involving League clubs and just one National League match with a combined total of 62 yellows and one red.
The last time we had an Atkinson refereeing us was when we won at Ipswich for the only time in my lifetime. The time before that was the playoff win in Cardiff.
Assisting will be regular visitor to the Hall, Robert Evans from Northampton and David Pilling from Reading, the latter being an NHS admin worker. Fourth Official is Morgan Conn, a Health and Safety worker from London who was last here to referee our Youth Cup match against MK Dons 2 years ago.
