Played them four times; won one, lost two, drawn one. Our win was their first visit to Roots Hall when an early Henry Sandat goal was enough to clinch all three points and they played with ten men for over an hour. Last year they reversed that result.
Man in charge is Wayne Cartmel from Luton. He grew up in the Lake District and started work as a farm hand before moving in to teaching. He subsequently became the founder and CEO of the company providing the leading applicant tracking system to improve efficiency in the realms of school and trust recruitment. He’s won a number of awards.
So, he’s doing okay in real work, how’s his refereeing going? Well … this is his third season at this level. His first didn’t go too badly after a shaky start and his second saw a decidedly average card count. His final match of last season was Gateshead beating Bromley.
This season, so far just two National League matches with 11 yellow cards and one PL2 development match at Chelsea. He's also done a bit of Football League Fourth Official duty.
This will be his third match at Roots Hall, the previous two both being the season before last. Firstly, was his Bank Holiday visit to Roots Hall for the game against Maidenhead. A yellow for Scott-Morriss and 2 of theirs and, in what was one of his earliest matches, he was a long way from being the worst of the numerous rookie referees at Roots Hall that season with a very reasonable performance. His other match was just over a year ago against Dorking when he cautioned just Lopata and again reasonable. So two matches and two 2-0 wins. Fingers crossed.
He was also appointed to two matches against Wealdstone last season, neither of which took place.
Assisting will be Daniel Cook from Braintree and, with his first Southend match, Joe Wright from the Aldershot area. Fourth Official is Paul Kelly from Gillingham who has been running the line at Roots Hall on and off for the last 13 years. He was the Assistant who was waving furiously to get Phillips harshly sent off against Dagenham all those years ago and I think it’s fair to say his officiating career is waning rather than waxing.
