Ref Watch Refwatch .......... Fylde (H)

Mick

The Ref Aficionado.
Just three matches played against Fylde and we’ve only managed to win one of them, losing the other two, both by 2-1. They have only picked up 4 points away from home so far this season. What could possibly go wrong ?

Tomorrow’s referee is Robert Massey-Ellis from Coventry, the husband (and Ellis part) of Sian Massey-Ellis who has regularly featured on televised Premier League matches proving to be one of the more reliable Assistant Referees.

Aged a little over 40, he is an Executive Director of a Medical Centre. Indeed, whilst his wife has been travelling the world officiating in all the top women’s tournaments, he has been engaged in all sorts of worthy activities. These include Operations Manager for the RSPCA, Management in the British Red Cross and Medical Manager for the British Army.

In his spare time, he has been working his way up through the ranks of non-league refereeing and is now in his fifth season as a National League referee, although for whatever reason, he only started last season at the beginning of March.

His first match at Roots Hall was our home match against Dorking in the FA Trophy when I don’t think he impressed greatly nor was he particularly bad. I don’t recall any cards. In 2021/22, he was also appointed to do the postponed home match against Maidenhead and then appointed for the Yeovil away match but changed at the last minute.

He did finally make it to Roots Hall for a League match on St Georges Day 2022 when we beat Halifax 1-0 thanks to a Kenny Clark goal. Just the two yellows shared; ours was Neal.

Then normal service resumed with him being appointed to our 2022/23 season opener at home to Boreham Wood and then reallocated with a late appointment at Barnet. Then he returned for the Torquay home match in September that year. A 2-1 defeat with 4 yellows to them and one for Kensdale. Next, he was appointed to our match at Maidstone in October. Once again, a no-show and Gavin Ward stepped in to replace him.

Then came the miserable away defeat at Aldershot still in 2022/23. Seven yellows with our four going to Kensdale, Scott-Morriss, Hobson and Mooney.

Next, his match on Valentine’s Day still in 2022/23. Again Halifax, again a win, this time 2-1. Kensdale yet again, Hobson and Scott-Morriss picked up yellows along with one of theirs. Most recently, he refereed last season’s match at Wealdstone when it was eventually played. Another 2-1 win with the only cards going to Miley and Scott-Morriss. Don’t think he impressed too many at that one.

This season he has done 8 games at this level with 23 yellows and 3 reds, all the reds, unusually, going to home players. One of those 8 games was Fylde’s only away win so far this season at Boston.

Assisting will be Stephen Brown from Ashford, Kent and Londoner, James Hurst who will be lining his 7th Southend match in the last 12 months. Fourth Official is another regular visitor, Laurentiu Hantea, a Service Engineer from Biggleswade.

He is getting a bit of stick on the other thread. I personally thought he had an excellent first half and tried to let things go where he could. I am certain he got the penalty wrong. Was convinced he was pointing to the spot. Other than that we have had far far worse - many of whom would have blown up for a foul in the build up to Walkers opener.

Was like 2 different people - excellent 1st half then shocking 2nd. The penalty call was wrong and got numerous other things wrong too. Didn't notice the assistants get anything wrong, in fact, the West one looked bewildered at some of the decisions the ref made! 4th official needed some lessons in how to operate the board....

Paul Clark on BBC Essex reckoned it was a penalty

Yes, we had Massey in the first half and Ellis in the second.

He was generous to Walker for his goal. Definite suspicion of a foul to win possession.

He was harsh on Walker for the "penalty". I was well the other side of the half way line and other than to say it looked like a penalty, I couldn't be sure. It looked to me like he'd blown for a penalty and then changed his mind which then left him nowhere to go other than the free-kick and card.

East Stand lino most certainly did get a few things wrong especially in the first half when he was kept busy with our marauding attacking down both wings. The match should have been out of sight by half time.

I've looked at the highlights on the other thread & to be honest I've changed my mind completely.

From the South Upper it looked nailed on but watching it back I actually think the guy tries not to touch Walker who throws himself on the floor. If there was any contact I believe it was minimal & certainly not enough to make him go down as he did. So in fairness to the referee I now think he got it right, although probably not a popular view & I suspect many will disagree.

I certainly disagree, I think it's quite clear that walker cuts across the defender, who brings him down, whilst raising his hands saying "I didn't touch him ref, honest"

The East Stand lino was very poor.
