There is little in the way of history to look back on between the two clubs. We’ve played twice, last season, and both matches finished as away wins – a record we’d like to extend by just one match.
Two of the original four appointed to this match remain, leaving a change of referee and one of his assistants.
Many people have advocated for more referees who have played the game professionally. I guess Tuesday’s referee is the next best thing. Man in charge is Dale Baines from Liverpool, the brother of former Wigan and Everton defender Leighton Baines, who made 582 appearances at club level before retiring 4 years ago. Not only that but Joe Simpson, one of his Assistants, is the son of the recently sacked manager of Carlisle, Paul Simpson, who played nearly 700 League matches scoring 150 goals, predominantly for Derby.
He’s in his second season as a National League referee. Last season he did 20 games with just 50 yellows and one red - well below average. One of those matches was our 2-1 away win at Kidderminster when Kensdale and Husin picked up the only two yellows in the match. I don’t think he impressed too many people.
This season four of his five matches have been at Football League level and the five games have produced just 13 yellows.
Assisting are Joe Simpson as described above, the Head of Partnerships and Sponsorships at JD Sports from Manchester and Oliver Nolan from Macclesfield, a Client Services Manager for a communications company. Fourth Official is Ben Robinson from Stoke.
