We have had comfortably the better of league matches with Aldershot over the years having played them 86 times, winning 35, drawing 24 and losing 27. Despite this supremacy, our recent record has been not so good. In the last 30 years we’ve played them 12 times. We’ve lost 7, won 2 and drawn 3 scoring just 12 goals (that goal count being improved significantly by our 4-1 win last time the two sides met!).
Man in charge Wednesday is Alan Dale from Ipswich, now in his eighth season as a National League referee and he has refereed Southend 5 times previously.
In his early thirties, he previously worked for Suffolk FA for six years, initially as Referee Development Officer, before progressing to Senior Referee Development Officer and then Workforce Development Manager. He left at the end of March to join the England & Wales Cricket Board as Regional Officiating Development Officer and was appointed to the Suffolk FA Board as a Non-Executive Director. Prior to all that he worked for Suffolk County Council and before that Ipswich Town Community Trust in various sport related roles.
He took charge of 2021/22 home match against Wrexham and did rather well with just two yellows to them and co-incidentally was appointed to the same fixture the following season. Unfortunately, there was a late change and a somewhat poorer referee did that one.
He then took charge of our impressive 3-0 win at Barnet back in November 2022. Just the one yellow card to Miley in that one, so all good again. Next, he took charge of the Trophy match against York in the same season. Both yellow cards (and both goals) to them.
Next he was at Roots Hall back in March 2023 for the 4-2 win over Boreham Wood – a result that helped to send the visitors down ! Two of the three yellows shown went to us (Miley and Scott-Morriss) and another decent performance from him.
Finally, he was in charge of this season’s home match against Boston back in August. A comfortable 2-0 win with yellows for Miley and one of theirs and yet another good performance from him.
So, the Trophy match excepted, we have an excellent record with him in charge. Long may it continue.
Making his second appearance as an official at a Southend match, first Assistant is Daniel D’Urso, 33-year-old son of the famous (or is that infamous?) referee Andy D’Urso. Having grown up in Billericay and been educated for 5 years at Westcliff High School for Boys, he now comes from Southwater in West Sussex and works for Inspired Energy PLC. His university degree was in Sociology with Criminology and his first proper job was as a Probation Officer. Other Assistant is Shaun Farrer from Reigate. Fourth Official is David Pilling from Reading, an NHS worker on the admin side.
