Man in charge on Saturday is Army Captain Danny McDermid. Only in his second season and yet to referee either Shrimpers or Orient, he has crammed more controversy into his year and a half than most referees manage in a career. His highlight was being charged by the FA with foul and abusive language to Dennis Wise (well you would, wouldn't you). Cleared, of course, by the FA. He has done virtually all lower division matches although they tried him out in a Championship match last season at Layer Road which went very badly. The Telegraph said after that game " referee Danny McDermid, a man fast developing a reputation for turning small fires into large conflagrations by applying liberal quantities of petrol."
After another match, Steve Thompson our ex-Manager then at Notts County said "The referee should look in the mirror and decide if he's a referee or if he should be at a kindergarten party. It was the worst refereeing display I've seen in 30 years of professional football. That man takes the biscuit."
Should be good ... looking forward to it.
His assistants trying to keep him on the straight and narrow will be Messrs Francis and Rock.
