Realism

As a Blues fan for the past 24 years (1st game was against Scunthorpe Utd, when a certain Ian Botham Played for them), I have never, since the creation of this site, felt like contributing to a topic as much as I do now. It goes beyond belief that the people who were slagging off Freddy for being lazy, disinterested, living off the goal against Man Utd etc etc, are now saying what a legend he was for Southend.

If you showed this kind of support during the tough parts of last season, and not got on his, and other players backs, then maybe will would still have Championship status.

Football Fans have always and will always have a short memory , and that includes myself.

There is no doubt Freddy is a top player but for some reason he used to wind me up last year when i just felt he could of given just 10% more to his game , i know he was frustrated but it did show when he was on the pitch if he had the hump and it got a few peoples back up.

That said i will always have fond memories of Freddy's time at the hall and if anyone asks me if he is a good player i always reply that he is quality.
All about being a follower of the great game i'm afraid

Your first post is on a par with scoring after 7 seconds on your debut, well said, my high opinion of him never changed, could not ever believe the slating he got on here .

I take it from the lack of replies to my post that I have hurt a few people by hitting a nerve, or are you not back from school yet!!

I have made my point, but please tell me, out of interest, who is the next blues player in line for a Shrimperzone slagging now that Freddy has gone.

Darryl Flahavan.

Freddy will always be fondly remembered. Yes, he could look lazy, maybe he was/is but look at his scoring record - he did exactly what it said on the tin.
No complaints, hats off to the lad and I wish him well - but if it's ever.....

I won't be happy!

Lets see how those people who were screaming at him for being lazy (only when we were losing strangely) feel next season when we no longer get to see what he can do. Id rather have a laid back guy in the team who can turn a game singlehanded than a player who works his socks off with not talent...

Im up for booing the new strikers if they dont score within the first 15 minutes !

In all seriousness Im hoping we see a bit less of the over the top behaviour we saw in the terraces next season as the league wont be as tough (I hope!)

I tell you something, there's some easy money to be made out there on those websites. There's at least one match a week during the English and Scottish season where you can put bets on both teams and the draw and end up with a tidy profit whatever happens.

It's just a case of having the patience to go through it with a fine toothcomb. The number of times I thought "Just give me 3 or 4 grand at the start of the football season just to bet, I'd never have to work again."

Anyway, getting back to the case in hand, Adam Barratt is my dark horse for copping it big-time from some Hall regulars.

I'm just not sure how to reply to it really mate?

I see exactly what you're saying, and there will always be times when a few people on message boards say things that others agree / disagree with (thats the beauty / downfall of the net). When your team is losing, the rational look for solutions; the irrational and emotional look to lay the blame. Personally, I never thought Freddy was lazy, disinterested, etc. The only thing I ever criticised him for was trying to do too much at times towards the end of last season single-handedly.

There were several times when a square ball or layoff might have got us an equaliser / winner, but I don't think that was necessarily due to his bigheadness or arrogance - more down to him not always trusting his support players.

Eastwood is the best player I've seen play regularly at the Hall (I never really saw Collymore in my youth other than on TV and in the very occasional game) but I'm of the belief that no one man is bigger than a club anyway. And just because he was awe-inspiring in his first 2 years here, doesn't mean he's not open to criticism, when warranted, during his leaner spells. Granted support is always better at those times, but testosterone runs high when you're losing and people look to their heroes (perhaps unfairly) to turn it around.

I think there was a minority that said those critical things for sure, and I get the feeling it's not me per se you were aiming your post at. But I fail to see just how any of the offenders will reply to your post as it seemed like more of a statement than a debate.

Anyway, I think for the good of next season the time is right for us to lose our talisman and gel all over again, hopefully finding a new set of "legends" at the same time.

Next player to get slated? That'll be Macca. Did no wrong last year, bound to get it in the neck this one! We endured a 3 month phase of hating Daryl on here already last year I believe Groyne Strain (I'll never understand that one either - he really ought to work at that "being taller" side to his game after hours...) so he'll be in the clear

Macca possibly, but not the one I think you mean.

McCormack wont ever get slaughtered as he is a 110% effort sort of player and is consistent, if not always outstanding.

MacDonald better score quick before getting Payntered.

See plenty of Flahavan knocking on this board at the moment so the "player of the year" contender may well be on the list.

Favourite though is Harrold from some of the opinion here theres people not even willing to give him a chance at a lower level....

Good post that fella.

Southend are no different to any team in the world as every team will have there moaners and groaners and boo boys.
Although i heard a little negative chants last season i honestly believe that in the big picture it was nothing really, Eastwood will look back at his time with us for the right reason's and not beacuse he once got told to fcuk off !!

Yeah, i see this year as a clean slate for our strike force after some very harsh criticism last season. It'll be interesting to see if they take the job vacancy going up front and pass the interview...

It maay take some time, but there's plenty of interesting combinations for Tilson to try out. I can't wait to see what happens...

I imagine Freddy got the brunt of it because people had been blessed for two years and had began to take his scoring for granted. Then when he doesnt get the same amount of goals in a season he is targeted for not doing so.
You have to remember that this is human nature though. How many people have you worked with who sometimes dont pull their weight and you F and Blind about them, but when they leave the company you attend their leaving drinks and wish them all the best and proclaim what a great person they was ? Human nature I'm afraid. People will always do it.
