Sure,

little'un.......5 pulled off a couple of usefull saves but was like a rabbit caught in the headlights when the big black fella came a hunting.

Wilson...6 did as best as can be expected from his limited pool of skill. Knows the basics and sticks to them.

Gilbert...8 Possible MOM for us, was quick to defend and counter attack. Got over run 2/3 on 1 in second half following brightons first substitution.

Borat...7 As dependable as ever, heart on sleeve stuff but found wanting in the vertical sense when the big bla............................

Clarke...7 See Borat..

Maher...5 Poor showing from the captain. Many stray passes and plenty of his 'volley donkey drops'. Did get it right with the through ball for the 2nd goal though.

Mac1....7 Solid performance, full of running and linked well with Bailey. Still has the tendancey to throw in the odd 2 footed challenge though.

Bailey...8 Solid as a rock and ever willing to attack the goal. Well taken 2nd.

Gower..4 Sulked a lot, moaned a lot but didnt do a lot. Requires some serious fitness & attitude training.

Harrold..5..See Wilson

Mac2..6 Was a slightly live wire but never caused their defence a problem. Good turns but lack of pace negates the positives.

Subs...not worth mentioning as hardly got a touch.

Manager..1 Serious lack of tactical nous. Never responded to the threats that were instantly obvious to the 5000 fans at the match following their inspired substitutions.

Flavs 5 - A couple of typical Flahavan wonder-stops (at least it looked that way from the away end several miles away) but we conceeded three goals from crosses in 15 minutes and the keeper simply has to be held accountable for that.

Gilbert 6 - Did as well as he could considering that he had to deal with two Brighton players on his own. Got forward well and caused them problems but literally went missing towards the end.

Wilson 4 - As poor as he was good against Millwall. Every time their wingers ran at him he turned away from them and ran. Distribution was woeful and he barely won a header all match which is supposed to be his strength.

Barrett 6 - Did well for most of the game, pulled off a sensational sliding block at 1-0 when a goal seemed certain but like Flavs can't not be held responsible for the defending at the end. Needs someone big and strong alongside him.

Clarke 6 - See Barrett.

Gower 5 - Playing as poorly as he has done in a couple of years at the time when we're asking him to do even more than normal as the sole winger in the side. Coincidence? I don't know.

Maher 8 - Our best player on the day. Controlled the tempo of the match and his passing radar was definitely working (which it hasn't been lately IMO). Great assist for the second

McCormack 7 - Played well and scored a fortunate goal. Managed to avoid being booked for once although he went close a few times.

Bailey 7 - Good player and a great goal. Works hard, strong in the tackle and an eye for a goal.

Harrold 6 - Worked his balls off with again no help from the ref. I sometimes think that Harrold needs to get shot before he gets a decision. Showed a few good touches on the ball and instrumental in our second goal firstly in creating the space for Bailey to run into and secondly in winning the ball whilst on the floor and knocking it to Maher to send in the assist.

MacDonald 6 - Again worked hard and occupied the back line for most of the match. Took a nasty knock in the second half but seemed to shrug it off.

Ah,
So Mr Beef, we tend to agree on most except for Maher...Pretty consistent. Would be interesting to see other's ratings.

Yeah our ratings aren't far apart. I'm usually the first to point out when Kev has had a bad game but I thought he did well yesterday.

Lets be honest though, we were all so far from the pitch that it was hard to judge what was going on half the time.

Some superb descriptions on there, have some rep. :D

*edit, when i've shared it around a little. Do you take IOU's? *

Strange how opinions differ so wildly. Gower aside I thought Gilbert was our poorest performer yesterday; caught out of position consistently and gave away possession on a number of occasions. After a promising first game v Orient I haven't been impressed with his perfomances and feel Francis should be given a chance to prove himself.

Flavs - 5 - Time for Collis to have a chance. Will he command the box more, relieving some pressure of the defenders?

Wilson - 6 - As said previously, Che does what Che does.

Barrett - 6 - Needs an experienced partner at centre back.

Clarke - 5 - I like Clarke a lot but don't think he and Barrett can play together. I'd like to see what Richards has to offer but better would be an experienced loan signing. I also couldn't help but feel that things may have been different if Efe had been at the back yesterday?

Gower - 3 - The poorest performance I've ever seen from him I think. Just didn't seem interested from the warm up onwards. Strange.

Maher - 6 - Good and solid but dead ball distribution needs to be more clinical

Macca - 7 - Hungry and scrapped for everything

Bailey - 9 - Outstanding. More and more impressed by him. All over the pitch yesterday, tackled well, passed well and has an eye for goal.

Harrold -7 - Another decent performance. Tilly's given him a job to do and he's doing it - just.

McDonald -5 - Tried hard but I fail to remember him making one telling contribution to the game.

Again the subs had no time to show what they can do.

My team for next Sat:

Collis
Francis
Barrett
Richards (Provided he plays well on Tuesday)
Wilson

Bailey
Maher
Maca
Gower (But happy for Black to be given ago if something wrong with MG behind the scenes)

Harrold
Eric

match report -

going home with the points until they got desperate and we lost our heads and headers -

in the brighton south stand they saw it like a giant killing of a better team -

i reckon savage would have been delighted to join SUFC - never heard his name mentioned on here before -

jcr would have had a field day !!!

From the Brighton Sports Argus, their Saturday night paper:

Flahavan 7
Gilbert 6
Barrett 7
Clarke 6
Wilson 6
Bailey 7
Maher 6
McCormack 8
Gower 7 - I quote from the match report "The lively Mark Gower..."
MacDonald 6
Harrold 6

My own view is that Bailey was easily our best player, Gower had his poorest game that I can remember for some time, while the others were all much of a muchness.

One other quote from the report to get some perspective: "The ball only went into the Southend box once in the opening 25 minutes of the match..."

Shame about the last 25 minutes.

Last 25...! Less than 10 was enough.

Sitting directly behind the dugout I would like to add a couple of points
- we bossed the whole game for 80 minutes without having many chances - the Brighton fans couldn't believe how good we were and frankly mugged/ bullied us out of it at the end
- The set piece warning from them came a minute before half time when Harrold was bullied off their last man leaving Revell a free header that he planted at the foot of the post
- first half we must have had 70% possession, when we lost the ball McCormack, Bailey and Maher would win it straight back. Then Gower Charlie Mac, Bailey and Maher would spray it around looking pretty until we lost it
_ Bailey 9/10 was our best player, but Maher 8/10, was by no means poor. He played well and loves this club.
- Once lost we would always win it back. This changed when Bas Savage came on and bullied us off the ball.
- I think we are poor in the air at the back and I never feel that comfortable unless it falls to either Clarke or Barrett (and you need more than two reliable heads at defensive set pieces)
- Black should have come on for a creative and hard working Gower. We should gamble a bit more around the box - when we started shootiung last year we scored a number of crackers - this has been forgotten a little trying top pass it in again
- we should make more of our possession and make sure when we play our pretty football the three men passing prior to the ball in make it into the box to finish the move. It just gets pumpee back out
-Subs do need making earlier to relieve pressure - Black has taken us up a gear whenever he has come on - we simply took too long to see their subs had worked.
- We will still go well this year and have uncovered another £million player in Bailey

Last 25...! Less than 10 was enough.

Fair enough, although I think our decline started when Brighton made 2 subs halfway through the second half replacing the left winger and moving the original left back to centre back with the other sub playing at left back - both subs exploited our right side - and that was before Savage came on to do damage in the middle.

Flavs: 6/10. Couldn't be faulted for any of the goals but his lack of presence in the box was telling.

Gilbert: 5/10. Great going forward but in his desire to get forward left gaping holes in our defense which we got punished for

Barrett/Clarke: 6/10. Fought for everything but were exposed for their lack of height by their big fella.

Wilson: 4/10: Even in the first half the amount of room he gave their winger was a worry and the second half he was pretty much absent

Bailey: 8/10 MOM: He's a real find this lad. Ran himself ragged, tough in the tacke and took his goal well

Maher: 7/10: Played well in a dominant midfield. His chip for the second goal was outstanding.

Macca: 7/10: Broke up their midfield play...Brighton started with 5 in midfield but you'd never have noticed the extra man

Gower 5/10: Doesn't look fit. Had the skill to beat his man easily but his crossing was poor.

Charlie Mac: 7/10: Played well, was a constant thorn in the brighton defense and will get better as the season progresses and he gets used to the pace of league 1

Ginga Ninja: 7/10: Slightly dodgy first touch aside, won most of the aerial balls and held the ball up well. Doesn't deserve the abuse he gets based on that performance.

Subs: I actually left when they scored the winner, couldn't bear to watch the game any longer. Tommy Black looked useful, but should have been on the pitch for Gower much earlier.

Tilly/Brush: 4/10- Oh dear. Not going to repeat what so many have already said but when Brighton bought on the big guy they had no answer and we suffered for it.

Withdean Stadium: Absolute joke. Couldn't see half the game the view was so bad and had no atmosphere whatsoever.

Brighton and their fans: Apart from the landlord of the pub we were at before the game telling us that the game had been delayed so that we'd stay in his pub rather than go to the game, their fans were great fun for the banter and Brighton itself has to rate as one the best towns I've been to away, particularly this time of year.

From my view 40 yards away behind the goal:

Flavs 6 - Fantastic stop at 3-2 but his aerial issues were never more apparent.

Gilbert 5 - Out of his depth and not a defender. Time for a change.

Barrett 5 - Centre backs should win headers at key moments.

Clarke 6 - Ditto. Some good stops but he doesn't offer the complete
defensive package. Part of the reason we're on our way to conceding another 80 goals this season.

Wilson 6 - Solid, not at fault for any of the goals (as I recall.)

Bailey 8 - A ray of light in a dark day

Maher 7 - Not the problem.

McCormack 7 - Nice goal, worked hard

Gower 6 - Put it in but little end product

MacDonald 4 - Anonymous again. Did he actually play? Drop him.

Harrold 5 - Battled away but Ron Martin would score more goals.

Subs - Too little, too late. Please can Tommmy Black stop shagging Tilson's missus and actually get a start?

The one thing which is painfully obvious (on a positive front) is that Black should start.

And I would agree. He has done the biz everytime I have seen him.

Get tough Tilly. It might not be pretty, it might not be popular but sometimes its what is required. You are the boss, so get tough. The team might not like it but you aint here to be loved by them....there are many more fans who would like to see some tough choices being made.
