Think it's Ron who deserves the credit. He's the one who has backed Brown in taking Ranger on and he is the one who has negotiated the new contract. I knew about this about a month ago, just didn't know when it was being announced!

I was pulling it..... everyone knows I'm a Brown Out fan, still!

My initial reaction to this is it's a huge gamble. Imagine if he commits some kind of serious misdemeanour and we're stuck with him for three more years? He's doing well with us so far but history is not on his side here.

I think the issue here is less a serious misdemeanour - as we could sack him - but if his attitude or fitness goes wrong.

I certainly think he's earned an improved deal but there's a danger his attitude relapses or he has fitness issues (he still can't play 90 minutes) and we're then stuck with a contract we don't want for an awfully long time. We had this with Bilel and we ended up paying him when he had no chance of playing (until we got a massive injury crisis - and then bringing him back was disruptive to the dressing room). I'd have been more comfortable with a deal whereby, say, he got a third year added on if he started 30 league matches in a season and we could see how he reacts to that extra security - does he become complacent or does he get fully fit?

Hopefully he continues as he has done in the four and a bit months he's been at the club and this is a long and profitable relationship for the club. He's been a real difference maker to the team but to give a three and a half year deal after 9 matches is quite a statement.

Ultimately I think it's Ron trying to show we've got faith in him, in order to drive his price up.

I have a contract at work, if I commit a stackable offence then I get the sack. Be the same for footballers.

Are your warnings mounting up?

I'd be shocked if this contract doesn't come with a "break clause" should Ranger misbehave. IF there is a said clause to protect the club then this is a truly sensational piece of business by Ron and Brown.

From far of like i am, but i love my club dearly, i have to ask how good is this guy, he doesnt seem to score goals on a regular basic, but he causes problems for defenders, so what have we got here, A Collymore, or something well down from that.

Better than giving a player that has never played for us a 3.5 year contract.

The last bit I think is spot on as well...Ron wanted to show him we care...part of the process. No repay us Ranger smash in a few goals and carry on playing with the right attitude and you can leave us a nice leaving gift of a £1M and a nice big pay rise for you.

He's been a long time out Turkish. At the moment his finishing is a work in progress, but you just get the feeling it will come. He causes chaos amongst opposition defences as it's hard to knock him off the ball and he wins most balls in the air as well. It's been a long time since I've heard the rising level of anticipation from the crowd when he goes for goal that I'm currently hearing, a little bit like Stanley, but not yet there. If he carries on as he is, and his fitness lasts 90 minutes then we are going to be very happy I think.

Please point me in the direction of that post. I did ask people to explain and I didn't condemn anyone on their opinion or choice I just wondered why! I have got it wrong at the moment but there is nothing to say we won't go into free fall and **** poor form like we did at the start of this year again and toy with relegation.

I'm sure AndyT did put a good post and I may have missed it, I know I'm a Mod but I also hold down a full time demanding job and have a family, so I can't read every post! I will always admit when I am wrong and with my assumption that Brown had used every excuse in the book and was destined to send us down, partially proved wrong with our good recent form I am going to admit I got it wrong then. But like I said there is still plenty of time for us to still get relegated and I'm not sure if Brown is the right man for the Southend job going forward.

Sounds to me like you want the team to fail, so that you can be proved right.

Objection your honour, that's conjecture and speculation !

He's no Collymore; not even Freddy was that.

I'd best compare Ranger to Bilel. He's big, strong, dominant in the air yet still nimble with his footwork and comes with a whole load of baggage. Where they differ is that Ranger is a few years older than Mohsni was, not as raw, and has hopefully learnt from his mistakes. He's also temperamentally very different - whilst Anton Ferdinand was all handbags Nile was actually holding players back and isn't anywhere nearly as hotheaded (like trying to compare someone to Stan, no-one's going to be as hot-headed as Bilel!) and has a calm demeanour.

Probably a better comparison (but non-SUFC) would be someone like Kenwyne Jones (ex Southampton) or Ray Jones the ex-QPR striker who died tragically young.

He's easily Championship quality if his head is in the right place. He can physically just dominate opponents.

Did you know the real Lone Ranger was actually black. But of course back in those days Hollywood had to have a white man as their hero. I think the black 'swingers' mask was some sort of compromise.

Not the first time you've tried to claim black is white, but maybe the first that white is black. The Lone Ranger was/is an entirely fictitious character and the idea that Bass Reeves was the original Lone Ranger is an internet-borne myth. Oh, I forgot, if it's on the internet, it must be true.

Nice one Nile, just make sure that is not one of Ron's IOU's you are signing. :winking:

I'm pretty happy to hear this news about Nile, he has the makings of being a cult hero - he is a real handful, even despite clearly not being 100% yet, give it another 8 - 10 games and we will reap the benefits of a player who should really have been playing at a higher level if he'd been in the 'place' he is now 4 - 5 years ago...

I reckon the benefits will far outweigh the risks - good work from RM and PB

It was actually on a TV documentary about the old West. So nothing to do with Internet.

Perhaps you might want to consider rescinding my red card.

Screen grabbing this, it will come back like a boomerang one day...

!! Like the twice-a-day accuracy of the broken clock, one day your relentless quest for any old smidgen of negative will be proven to be correct, and Brown will indeed leave or be sacked.

Difference between us is that I hope that day is a long way off, because that will likely mean that the club has done ok. On the other hand, it seems to me that you actually hope for failure and take no joy in anything positive coming from the club, even during a time when there are certainly positives to witness. If I am wrong, please help me to understand where I have gone wrong. I struggle to see the point of "supporting" with such a mindset, though an old poster called Blue79/Southend Pier would be proud of you, and you would get on like a house on fire.

One question on usernames. While mine works well for me on account of several grandchildren and an ever-expanding waistline, which of the teams referenced in your username gets your most passionate support?

It wasn't red it was yellow. No appeal on yellow cards (except for mistaken identity (?)).
