How or why is it a gamble?

My initial reaction to this is it's a huge gamble. Imagine if he commits some kind of serious misdemeanour and we're stuck with him for three more years? He's doing well with us so far but history is not on his side here.

Brown said when he signed his year deal there were clauses if he went off track I'd assume these clauses remain. Ron isn't an idiot

Then we would have the right to terminate his contract.

Things are much different now tho. He's not hanging about in a London gang anymore. He's not going to the bad places in London. The penny finally dropped and he's realised football doesn't mix with gang life. It all came crashing down to earth. He had to make a choice, and he chose football. Two of his best friends getting stabbed, murdered, sent him off the rails at Blackpool. I'm not condoning all the bad and stupid things he's done, I'm just saying he's in a different mindset now. He also just went through no clubs wanting to give him a chance, because of his appalling history, exept Southend. I can't see him blowing his last chance.

Fair enough, I haven't read the contract.

Considering though that Ron Martin once effectively shredded an entire squad full of two and three year contracts I wouldn't worry too much.

I have a contract at work, if I commit a stackable offence then I get the sack. Be the same for footballers.

There are shades of Stan here. Young player with loads of talent making some bad choices (if you've read Stan's autobiography you'll know what I mean) & nearly being lost to the game, gets a chance at little old Southend, gets a huge group hug, feels all loved, turns his own and the club's fortunes around, and the rest is history. Not saying Nile is quite in Stan's league, but could certainly get back to the Prem in my opinion. Good news.

Yep, there are a few similarities.

Stan's early career was dogged* by working under Ray Train at Walsall who he despised.

Often, like the Lone Ranger by the sounds of things, It's just finding the right set-up to feel comfortable with.

I don't blame Ranger for walking out on Blackpool. What a shambolic set-up and his no-play/no-pay contract there was just a recipe for disaster.

*Yes, I know! :winking:

Fair enough, if we have the safeguards still in place, it's excellent news. Ranger brings more to the side than any striker we've had since Eastwood, for me.

What a great signing and brilliant for the club!! How much have the team improved since he's been playing? He's a class above league 1 and we're very lucky to have him.we gave him a chance and he's shown us the loyalty we deserve! Yes he has a reputation and a troubled past but the guy has turned he's life around and blues are reaping the rewards from it! He's a pro footballer why would he wanna jepodise this great chance! Up the blues
