R.I.P Nat Lofthouse

A proper old style English centre forward, he scored 30 goals for England in just over 30 matches. He earned the nickname the Lion of Vienna, when he scored a goal for England in a 3-2 win despite being elbowed in the face and bought down by the keeper.

RIP

RIP Nat Lofthouse,God knows want he thought of the overpaid, overated England players of today.

Any reason why so few caps? Surely someone so prolific would be the first name on the team sheet.

There were fewer internationals in those days. I'm not sure of the qualification process to the World Cup in the 50's, and the European Championships didn't start until 1960 so there were not the plethora of games and participating nations as there is today. Therefore there would be the Home International's and IIRC qualification groups would comprise only 4 teams, therefore a maximum of 6 matches.

Added to which he had competition for his place with the likes of Stan Moretnsen.
