promotion and relegation

Manager
just a thought i was having last night. i know there is such a thing as performance related pay and obviously win bonuses but is there actually such a thing as promotion or relegation related pay?

this thought came after i was deliberating the potential transfer of JCR. Would it not be sensible for JCR to sign a contract which is less than he is asking for but has a clause included which raises his wage to his required amount should we get promoted? this way it gives the player motivation to play well and win and if he performs to the required standard then he will be rewarded.

in contrast, i suggest clauses be included to lower wages should the club get relegated, this therefore helping to lower costs and stop clubs going into administration. i suggest possibly at 10% decrease in wage, afterall it would be players fault for getting relegated.

what does everyone think?

You cant just blame the players for getting relegated, and this would cause players to jump ship early if relegation looked a possibility, so in short i dont much like it

In the font of all football knowledge that is Football Manager, You can indeed give players clauses in their contract regarding rises and deductions in pay with relegation and promotion.

So i'd imagine it'll be the same in real life.

From what I heard and using Southampton as an example.....most of their players (if not all) had a relegation clause. When they got relegated from the Premier$hite they lost their so called 'good' players as they were on a significantly lower wage.

Naturally most clubs dropping from the Premier$hite will be unable to afford the Premier$hite wages in the Championship.

I have no idea whether Southend use these claues.

oh well, just a thought, but to answer S2TC, this wouldnt just be players exclusively but the club inclusively ie, from managers, coaches and physios to clubshop staff, sorry steve and grim!
