Project in Ethiopia – UPDATE – 3rd July
Dear All,
Firstly, a HUGE thank you to all those who have been so supportive of my work this summer. It has been quite overwhelming when strangers have showed great acts of kindness. My family and friends, who I always knew I could rely on, have been brilliant yet again. I want to get this gushing bit over early on, but you have no idea how much it means to me. Thanks (Big Grin!).
So, on to the current progress… I have a stock cupboard that should be full of my own teaching resources, books etc. However, it is currently piled up with various bagged up equipment that will help run the school in Mekelle for a good while! I'm glad I have a large luggage allowance on Ethiopian Airlines but not sure I'll even have room to squeeze in a pair of pants for myself at the moment. Not that important anyway, I'm sure. As well as stationary, I have received all kinds of fantastic items that will really light up the lives of the children in the care of the Daughters of Charity. I feel humbled already thinking how much your items will mean to the children. On this note, there is probably not much more I can physically carry… unless you have any ideas for things that are really light or really small or things you think are real essentials.
There are still ways in which you can help out though… fear not!
Myself and Tommy (from SCIAF) are both still relatively inexperienced in teaching English as a foreign language. I have been given a few books and pointers so far, but if you have any suggestions of websites, books, resources, tips and hints we would be grateful! We are currently putting together what we have, but anything further would be great. If anyone has experience of teaching in Africa or a similar environment and can suggest ideas that would be particularly helpful! I'm not sure we will have an interactive whiteboard, internet, unlimited photocopying etc like at school usually though…
A friend of mine, Nick Tisi is currently working on producing a song book and if you have any suggestions for that please drop him an email at nick_tisi[at]scotiacapital.com. We are looking for songs that are easy to learn and will help teach and improve students English.
Lastly… money! Tommy and I are now seeing exactly how much we have to take out with us. We want to take as much cash out with us so we can provide for as many needs of the Daughters of Charity and their students as much as possible. Sr Medhin (our DoC contact) has already suggested that our money will go a long way in Ethiopia which hopefully means we can make a big difference. You will be making a direct contribution to these young people cared for by the Daughters of Charity. Donations can be made to this fund in the following ways… http://www.justgiving.com/ethiopia07 is the quickest and easiest way. It is also gift-aided too! Otherwise please post cheques, made payable to CAFOD to Mr Andrew Lewis, St John Payne RC Comprehensive School, Patching Hall Lane, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 4BS
Lastly, I've started up my blog already which I will endeavour to update whilst out in Ethiopia. Please find it at http://www.ethiopia07.org.uk.
Thanks again, you really have been amazing in both your kind words and actions. I love you all!
