Pro40 Div Two Title Race

BLUEBLOOD

Moderator of Moderators
Essex are assured of at least an end of season play off berth as Yorkshire defeated Glamorgan yesterday (in hindsight a Glam victory would've suited us better) and K*nts game at Northampton was lost to the weather

Remaining Fixtures :-

Tomorrow: Surrey vs K*nt
7/9: Warwicks vs ESSEX
9/9: Yorks vs Warwicks
13/9: K*nt vs ESSEX
& Northants vs Yorks

Promotion will be sealed if the pikeys fail to win tomorrow (a tie / NR would mean they can catch us on points but we would've won more games, which is the first decider after points gained)

Aarrgghh .. Essex 2nd XI have just failed in their attempt to add their own KO Trophy to the one won so gloriously by the firsts 2 weeks back

Chasing a modest 221 to win we slumped to 150-9 before Wheater 52* and Ahmed 23 so nearly produced what would've been a remarkable rescue act, but it wasn't to be and Hampshire triumphed by 7 runs :'(

It was a superb effort from the last pair to get us close to be honest. At 150-9, having lost six wickets for 32 runs, the game looked up, so all credit to Wheater and Ahmed for putting on 63 for the last wicket and making a game of it.

I thought Wheater looked impressive with the bat, hitting two sixes, and had nerves of steel. His keeping was adequate, though he missed one chance off of Tim Phillips, but he will improve this over time. Tony Palladino was probably the pick with the ball, his first six overs only going for 9 runs during the Powerplay overs, whilst Mickleburgh and Phillips added 60-odd in good time, putting us in a strong position.

All in all, the future looks bright for Essex, and I hope the Academy system already in place continues to yield products at its current rate.

Thanks for the report ES ... i just followed the game online personally but odf course its always better to get the thoughts of someone there

we'll win the pro40 div 2 this year and then div 1 next year to the competition as winners.

by the looks of the weather surrey v kent will be off although bloody charles collville on sky last night still insisted surrey can go up, muppet, so they may try and get some sort of game.

Kent 100-1 off 14 Overs.

Ironically sky just flashed up stats that The Oval is the bowlers graveyard in domestic limited overs games this season.

I detest Collville. He must be the poorest cricket commentator of all time. My mate had a row with him in Australia a few years ago and made Collville look the knob he is.

How did he ever get a job like he has knowing so little and having no experience of playing 1st class cricket at all? Truly one of lifes great mysteries indeed.

totally agree got to be the worst and most biased commentator on sky. its a shame because the rest of the cricket lot bar willis are really good.

I like Colville tbh ... but no one comes close to Bumble, who is an absolute legend IMO

i'm sure its down to him that no matter how bad or what division surrey are in they are always given about 6 games live on sky a year and that's before you have a cup run and more get added.

in my opinion they should go back to having the old sunday league, when all games were played on a sunday with a 1pm start time and leave the floodlight games to T20.(I know they are scrapping the comp) but as you say and this often applies to T20 floodlight games as well win the toss bat first game over.

I'd be interested to see what the stats are for teams with regards to the day night games ie games played, won, lost, batted first etc.

I'm in favour of these floodlit games being just the T20 games, would certainly level the playing field a bit more in our domestic limited overs league also as SUFCEssex says a return to the Sunday League would be nice, would of thought this would be better for crowds as well.

It does make a difference, for Surrey thats 2 day nighters that we've played and lost the toss which has had a huge impact on the game.

Also why I'm trying to reshape the domestic game, how bout returning the FPT to a straight knockout tournament. For me since it went to the group stage format its lost its appeal. Was always nice to see the odd minnow roll over a giant, the FA Cup of cricket they called it.

funnily enough i know someone who has worked this out and posts on here occassionally but posts a lot on the essex site so will see what he can do.

done a few of the old FPT when it was a knockout cup berkshire away when there were no stands and you just sat right on the boundary rope and chatted to the fielders, happy days nice to get the minor counties involved again. with the league format you can lose your first two games and thats you out effectively.
