Portsmouth

Bare with me because to us, this is slightly linked with Southend.

Portsmouth have been given permission to sell players by the FA and FIFA before the end of the season. Is it just me or is this just bang out of order? We are in as much trouble as them but we do not get the hype because we arent a Premier ***** team and we certainly wouldn't have the rules bent for us.

I just think this is a total disgrace!

They are in administration though arent they and we are not ?

I thought being in admin meant you could sell players, and to be honest Im glad we cant !

Slight difference. Their debts are around the £50m+ mark, ours aren't. They have players that they can sell and can still fill the bench, we need to go into our reserves to fill the bench.

The premier league seem to be going out of their way to ensure Portsmouth don't go under which I have no problem with especially if it encourages the Football League to adopt same approach. I have a feeling though that the FL are hoping one of their clubs will go under and Stockport seem to be the prime candidate given FL have apparently rejected 3 takeover bids for them. Having been asleep on the job for years regarding clubs finances the FL want to be seen to be doing something no matter how random or unfair.

Er, I'd rather Ronny wasn't given the green light to sell any players thankyou very much. We need everyone of them to survive.

Neither to do I but I think it is good that PL are prepared to relax their rules to help a club in trouble and I hope the FL will adopt a similar approach and not bureaucratically enforce an arbitary rule that may put a club out of business. As I understand technically Stockport could be booted out of FL at end of April for being in administration for 12 months

Many have been saying for years now that football club finances are based in cloud cuckoo land and that it is an unsustainable model.
Now, in his last few days in charge, and after a final match attended as supremo at Roots Hall, of all places!, Lord Mawhinney finally seems to see the light and starts talking about squad wage caps as a percentage of club income, et al. Obviously not noticed any problems in the past when he was in a position of power and able to do something about it!!!!

I don't like to see any club struggle or go to the wall financially, it's too close to home to wish it on anyone I feel, however, I have a lot less sympathy for those in the Premier League as they have been the seedbed of this malaise. The PL in its effort to blow its own trumpet and become the 'best League in the world' has taken its eye totally off the ball with regard to finances. Players wages have been allowed to reach ridiculous levels and the clubs are only able to finance their wage bills with the massive income from television rights, a revenue stream which is about to reduce drastically if Sky are forced to wholesale their sports channels to other broadcasters and cut their prices.
I have a feeling that Portsmouth will be the first of several. I thought it very interesting that when Gold was buying into West Ham he said that he was only doing it because it was his childhood club and that it made absolutely no business sense whatsoever. He also said that since he and Sullivan had left Birmingham they had looked for another club to buy into and had had financial DD done on most PL clubs that were likely targets and that he felt that 6 or 7 were unsustainable and that out of them he would expect 3 or 4 to be in very serious trouble within 6-12 months.......

When was that statement made? any ideas on which clubs he was talking about?

It was in one of the Sunday heavyweights business sections if I recall, but he didn't name names although he did say some of the names would surprise people, I took from that that it wasn't all Hull's and Wigan's......
It was one of those articles that you read and think 'oh, interesting' but don't really file away for future reference if you know what I mean. I'll see if I can find it later.
