The man in charge of today's match is Phil Gibbs from Birmingham. He is employed as Assistant Headteacher at a boys' secondary school in Kings Heath.
In his third season as a League referee, he has refereed Southend twice before. The most recent was the 2-1 home defeat to Cheltenham this season and the other was the home game last season when we beat Hartlepool 3-2 (from 2-0 down at half time) and one of theirs was sent off. He did pretty well in that game.
This season his card count is a little below average and he has been getting his share of Championship matches. Not the quickest around the pitch.
Assisting him will be James Adcock from Nottingham and Paul Hobday from Birminham with Carl Dunn from Stafford standing by on 4th official duties.
