Plastic pitches

Feature on sky sports news about it anybody got any views on it?? should synthetic pitches be used? or stick with good old grass?

Stick to grass as I think it's safer, in a way. Friction burns are really bad when they happen on astroturf.

Mad man, i think i'd rather get the ball smacked in my face than slide on astro turf

Have you played on that 'rubber crumb' surface?

It's used in most of the 'Goals' five-a-side centres nowadays. Instead of sand being used with the turf, they use bits of rubber (like shredded car tyres).

You can slide on the surface and not get burns, plus it plays much truer - the bounce is far less exaggerated and the ball doesn't run as quickly as it does on 'traditional' astro turf.

I play ont these type pitches at Finsbury leisure centre and think it is like playing on a poorly fitted carpet.

I will confirm that it does not cause burns when you get hacked over but I prefer playing on old skool or 'classic' astroturf.

I have played on a new type synthetic pitch at Borehamwood (yes, their practice pitch is synthetic) and I can tell you it is amazing. It is not the short stuff at normal leisure centres that burns you, but is like real grass. It also takes a proper stud, unlike older versions. There was no difference between it and real grass.

The problem however, was that it broke my boots! I stopped too sharply and the back studs and mounting was ripped off my left boot. I played the last 20 minutes like that and kept falling over!

The game was a friendly and it ended all square. We lost the penalty shoot out 5-4. Guess who missed?! I blame my boots, I couldn't "plant" my left foot properly in case I fell over.

IIRC Preston QPR and Oldham used artificial turf in the 80's

All 3 had very good home records and were all in the higher reaches of their divisions.

Basically its unfair as the other teams will only play once a season on the surface and will not get any real time to adjust as full size all weather pitches are not exactly common place, where as the side with the pitch will be able to train on grass for away games.

Luton did too. Went a long way towards their having such a good record in the cups during the late 80s.
