SOUTHEND UNITED manager, Phil Brown, has urged the Blues faithful to get behind his side as they look to cement a Sky Bet League One play-off berth when struggling Oldham Athletic are the visitors to Roots Hall Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking ahead of what is a massive week for the Blues, with promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers also coming to south-east Essex, Brown said: “I want to get that message out to the supporters that it might have to be a patient game, I want to get it out to the supporters that we need you on Saturday. I think that’s the most important message I can get to anybody that’s coming to the game on Saturday. You need to get behind these players, get behind the team because it’s probably the most important three points of the season.
Brown was aware of Oldham’s recent improvement, despite their lowly position in the table, adding: “You say battling against relegation, and I know that I’ve made that comment in my programme notes. But it’s a little bit harsh on John Sheridan more than anything else, not Oldham itself.
“He’s gone back there for the third time and since his appointment, they have certainly had an upward trend in results, in fate and form. He’s doing a great job there. He needs probable that magical fifty (points) that everyone talks about and he’s only five points away from it. But he’s run-in is quite harsh, he’s coming up against teams at higher levels of the division. He’ll be looking to get a point or points any way he can get them.
“I think he’s got a run of us, Fleetwood and Bolton Wanderers as his next three. With that in mind, I think John and Oldham will be coming to Roots Hall to frustrate.”
The Blues chief continued: “We need the ball boys to be bang at it need our players to be bang at it, we need the supporters to be bang at it. They are going to come and frustrate us, there’s no doubt about it in my mind. We’ve got to make sure as a team we motivate the supporters and the supporters motivate us. It’s going to be a combined effort, there’s no doubt about it and we are going to need everybody to come to the party to win the game.”
