Just seen on twitter that PB might be interested in O'Toole again. I'm not a huge fan of signing Deegan to be honest, nothing against the guy but we need a striker who can score not another midfielder, therefore any interest in O'Toole who I believe is unfit and overweight according to some Northampton fans is even more baffling! Really not sure PB has a clue what he is doing!

Even more surprising given Barnard's record at Stevenage. O'Toole does have a decent goalscoring record from midfield but I agree that we should look to be getting more out of what we have first.

Phil said he wouldn't sing on the pitch again but it seems like we are not to far away from that experience and an entourage of stewards switching to white coats to help and serenade him on and off the pitch?

We need to score more goals, it doesnt matter where the goals come from.

It has been discussed over the last couple of days how Barnard has gone to another team and suddenly scored goals so what is it that has benefited him? He isnt any different than he was here, is he benefiting from playing with different tactics or different players ? (Its not straight forward tactics as Stevenage aren't free scoring themselves before Saturday).

Point is our lack of goals is not just because our strikers dont score, if you look through the BBC match report for Saturday notice how many chances are missed by strikers and the rest of the team, very few fall to the strikers in the first place.

A change to the midfield dynamic could result in more chances for the strikers, or just more goals from midfield, either way we benefit.

O'Toole of last season scored 12 goals and would have been a great signing for us, the problem is the O'Toole of this season doesn't sound like the same player...

just like Hurst then.

When is said we need a striker that can score that was regarding getting someone in new in addition to Barnard coming back. I see on another thread regarding Deegan that the issue of formation is mentioned time and time again. I think this is where PB is struggling. Whatever formation he picks still struggles to score goals so whether O'Toole comes in or not unless PB can find the right formula then it doesnt matter. However, a fox in the box type striker of which we dont have, may be the difference in our scoring. Watch the amount of balls that bounce around the six yard/penalty spot area, yet we have no one to finish. My main point is also that surely midfield is the one area we have plenty of players in and on paper decent league two players. Wouldnt we all agree that Leonard, Worrell, Timlin, Payne, Hurst, Atkinson, Clifford and potentially Deegan are a good crop of players, Maybe not all on form, but if and when they do all hit form they will take some stopping. Where would O'Toole fit in and who would you drop out?

As is aid earlier, according to Northampton he is unfit and overweight and cant get in their side which has struggled this season, earlier in the season not many on here wanted him, so why would it be different now?

Southend United manager Phil Brown to rekindle interest in Northampton Town's John-Jo

SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown could be about to rekindle his interest in Northampton Town midfielder John-Joe O’Toole.

Rather than the hypothetical signing of a Sheffield United rapist, this is someone who we would appear to have a real chance of signing.

Do we want him though?

As much as I don't want him, if he was really as bad as we're all led to believe then surely White or Coker would be urging Brown to avoid him like the plague? Yes he scored goals from midfield but I've got a sneaky feeling that signing the toole will hinder Payne's development which would be a disaster.

As opposed to last season when he got in the side and that side got relegated.

I'm not sure however that he is unpopular. He got in the PFA side which is a popularity contest.

Ask the fans is the best bet. There were plenty on here that didnt want him and by the sound of it Northampton fans wont be bothered if he left. What went on last season is in the past, at the moment if reports are right he isnt doing the business, is unfit and overweight. I fail to see how he can benefit our side. Who would he replace in our team, Timlin? Leonard? Worrell? Deegan? Payne? even Hurst? id take any of them over this guy.

I'm not arguing for him.

Could this re-kindled interest be a cunning ploy by wily old Mr Brown to unsettle Northampton/O'Toole before we play them? Either that or he's just taking advantage of the fact that O'Toole appears to be currently out of favour at Northampton to snap him up.

It's probably more for Gary Deegan's agent's benefit.

I dont think we need another midfielder as O Toole clearly is. As expressed in many comments above who would that put out of place? They may be unfair rumours but allegedly not a Team Player? He signed a 3 year contract with the Cobblers, would that mean a fee?
O Toole has played 143 games in the past 5 years, scoring just 19 goals in total. Admittedly he had a good year , last year with Brizzle Rovers. He has apparantly ( Cobblers website) played 15 times this year and scored.........NIL. His disciplinary record is the second worse in the club with 4 yellows. His contribution in total to Northamptons goals in 15 games is TWO assists, wow!! His past 5 year goalscoring average is 1 in 8 games, Two minutes ago Phil said our goalscorers would come good and promptly backs that up with sending Barney out on loan. In his Echo comments about OToole he says we do NOT have an abundance of strikers , really? hence his interest in O' Toole ??? Incidentally Cobblers list 5 strikers , 3 of whom have hit 19 goals between them. ( Corr, Weston and Coulthirst 7 ) Dont tell me , Northampton play a different formation that magically helps there 3 strikers score 19 goals, and look where they are in the league? No thanks, Phil , have another weeks break and re-think?
