Breaking News Pepple recalled by Luton

They maybe near the top despite having lots of loanees rather than because of having loanees?

I asked this before - what's in it for the loaning club or the loanee if the club they're going to already has 5+ loans? It surprises me clubs let players go there if they're only going to be squad players.

How many loans and squad size have other clubs in the league got?
I personally think its highly unlikely loanees have not been a major factor in their success. Ive seen it time and time again since we have been in this league

I take your point about what does the loanee club get from it if your loanees are competing with 9 others but Is strong Competition for places good? I suppose thats arguable both ways, but I wouldn't mind more than 2 players for each spot and clearly thats working too for the league leaders
tI think there is also a clear advantage to having a larger squad, and I have listed in previous post 7 important reasons why that is so in this league with 7 subs at this period in time

The top clubs mostly have large squads, for choice and rotation

We are back to a squad of 19. Do you think it helps York and Barnet to have 27?

Also we have at least managed to bring in 4 loanees. Pepple being the best of the bunch

4 of the top 5 sides average 10 loanees. So Do you think sharing the wages, getting to look at 10, and therefore a higher chance of getting a close up look at some really good young talent is wise?

A lot of the these also loanees are from ready made Under 21 sides from higher leagues. Also does it enhance the loaner clubs prospects of picking some up permanently if not this season then next or in the future?in on a permanent, by the sheer force of numbers being seen close up>

plus t does he choice and rotation aspect helps those clubs or hinders them on the balance of probabilities? What if 3 of your ten turn out to be of Pepples quality and propel you to promotion, even if they are gone next year? Then you rinse and repeat?

Waldren has been written off by several on here for no reason other than it's the thing to do. The poor sod has had too few opportunities or decent runs in the team for supporters to really be able to cast judgement it seems to me. However, Kev and co see him in training and I'm starting to wonder of he has lost their confidence in him. That would be a real shame as the bloke has scored goals regularly in the past. No doubt more informed posters on here will tell me that I'm wrong.
I want Waldron to succeed but having seen most of his 23 appearances - the majority of which were fwiw starts - I think that’s unlikely.

Thats not because it’s the thing to do but based on an assessment of having seem him play: the (lack of) quality of his touch, his play strength, his lack of improvement over the last 51 weeks.

It would seem that management have come to the same conclusion and at 28 he’s hardly one for the future.

I think he only had half a season of scoring at NLN level when he joined us. Had he been successful he’d have been an outlier.

I’d still pick him over Bonne for Saturday though.

I'd take an unfit and disinterested Nile Ranger over Bonne to be fair.

I don’t fully follow why Luton would do this, assuming another loan at League 2. He has already had a couple of unsuccessful loans with this one currently working out for him. I can’t see the benefit of him sitting on the bench somewhere else for a few weeks and trying to establish himself when he is settled here and scoring. Surely his stock would be higher by staying here and hitting potentially 15-20 by May than risk another failure elsewhere
By recalling Pepple, Luton may be seeing whether Southend are so keen on this striker that they are prepared to pay a substantial fee for him...

Never fall in love with a loanee! It will be interesting to see what Luton have planned for him next. Hopefully not a loan to FGR!

I'm not that fussed in honesty - partly because there's always another one and partly because I think in the last few games we're becoming over-reliant on Pepple doing something out of the ordinary and getting us a goal. That's not doing us any favours in the long run, so either we need to start playing as a proper team or questions need to start being asked about our management. Sorry - but that's where I am.

We still have Bonne, Walker, Waldron, Kendall - most other teams in our leagues would be quite pleased with that. If Pepple is going back, I suspect there's an option to bring a replacement in too. These players need to start delivering - or delivering as much as any forward can deliver in a team where the midfield seems intent on slowing everything down. Over to you Kev!

Which of course we shouldn't be - because there's no need at our level of the game to pay a substantial fee for anyone. If York are daft enough to, let them get on with it.

Blimey The kids done OK but he's not God fellow Shrimpers

I wish Pepple well in his future and thank him for playing his best while at Southend United FC

Anyway talk around the Pubs in Wickford this afternoon that Harry Cardwell on his way back.

You sure about that? Bonne has a reputation based on one good season at this level about 6 years ago and has scored about 4 goals since then (**** knows how). Waldron has had one good season at Step 2, and has barely featured for us. Walker - jury is massively out, but doesn't look like the answer to any of our problems. Kendall is really the only one that sparks any kind of enthusiasm.

Maher has signed all of them, and they were all welcomed by fans when they joined. Are they all not good enough now? If so we either have a problem with recruitment or with coaching.

Good job we still have our top striker GSM !!! Nobody still here really gives you any confidence that they will produce the goals we need.
Really put this down to our style of play which is not attacking or risk taking . Possession football seems to stifle creativity and playing to people's strengths. How many times do we go backwards and sideways instead of getting the ball into the opposition box at the first opportunity. Really believe that Stan and Freddie would have struggled with this boring system.
